Supporting the Next Generation of Legal Leaders
For Tom ’75 and Kathy Kahle, creating a scholarship at Ohio State Law was about more than financial support—it was about investing in people and the future of the legal profession.
Tom Kahle’s time at Ohio State was deeply impactful, and he wanted to find a way to give back. Starting a scholarship felt like the best way to see that their investment was working and making a difference.
The Kahles strongly believe that lawyers should reflect society and the communities they serve. They began their scholarship fund with the goals of helping bring talented students to Ohio State Law and growing the profession.
“We wanted to give back in a tangible way,” said Tom Kahle. “If we could make a difference in the life of just one person, it would have been worth it.”
The Kahles’ scholarship has now had four recipients, and meeting all of them has been a “universally positive” experience.
“Each recipient has been incredible and inspiring,” he said. “There’s no doubt in our minds that they will make a profound difference with their legal education.”
The current recipient, Morgan Frye ’28, is continuing this outstanding legacy.
Law school was not always on Frye’s radar. It was only after interning in the General Counsel’s office at her undergraduate school and adding a legal studies minor that she determined it was her next step.
Frye grew up an Ohio State fan, frequently coming to Columbus to visit family and for football games. When an opportunity came to play softball for the Buckeyes, she jumped at the chance. After a dominant season in spring 2025, Frye began her legal education in the fall.
“Moritz is an excellent program, and the administration worked with me in navigating my journey as an athlete and prospective law student,” she said.
The impact of this scholarship goes beyond financial assistance for Frye. Tom Kahle has also been a trusted mentor as she navigates law school.
“It was extremely helpful to get his guidance,” Frye said. “He helped me with how to balance law school and life as well as the evolving job market for 1Ls. I attribute a lot of my successes in law school to him.”
Tom Kahle urges other alumni to consider giving back through scholarships. Meeting the students who will go on to change their communities makes all the difference.
“It is an incredibly rewarding experience,” he shared.
