The Ohio State Law Journal, the highest-ranked law review in Ohio and among the top forty law reviews in the country, is published six times annually by a management and staff comprised entirely of students at the Moritz College of Law.
About OSLJ
The Ohio State Law Journal publishes articles by professors, practitioners and students on the most salient and important legal issues facing the nation and the world. More than hosting elite scholarship, however, the Ohio State Law Journal facilitates it. In consecutive school years, for example, OSLJ hosted two U.S. Supreme Court justices as the keynote speakers at our annual Symposium: Ruth Bader Ginsburg in April 2009, and Antonin Scalia in November 2009.
Originally published more than seventy-five years ago as the "Law Journal of the Student Bar Association," the Ohio State Law Journal is a general interest review that is intertwined with the growth of the law school itself. In the Journal's inaugural year of 1935, the law school also welcomed its first iterations of the Student Bar Association, Moot Court and Legal Aid. Like the Journal, Moritz has since become on of the top law schools in the country. Membership on the Ohio State Law Journal offers students an exceptional opportunity to gain editing, research and writing skills and to publish their own scholarship. The Journal staff members edit articles written by some of the best legal scholars in the country and also participate in our student Note writing program. The Journal‘s Publication Selection Committee chooses about ten Notes for publication in the Ohio State Law Journal each year.
The Journal offers approximately half of its staff member positions to students ranked in the top 10% of the 1L class, and the other half to the top performers in the annual writing competition. The writing competition occurs shortly after the end of final exams in May and lasts ten days. The competition requires a ten-page legal analysis paper and a brief editing assignment. For the ten-page paper, the students will be provided with a writing prompt at the beginning of the competition, and the research is restricted to the list of provided sources (cases, statutes, law review articles, etc.). In recent years, participants have been asked to write about free speech in schools and the scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The editing assignment tests knowledge of Bluebook rules by requiring the identification of errors in text and footnotes. Because the competition occurs before final grades are posted for the 1L class, all students who are interested in Journal membership should plan to participate in the writing competition.
The writing competition is open to rising 3Ls and transfer students, although space is limited. Rising 3Ls interested in Journal membership should attend the meetings in late Spring of their 2L year, and participate in the writing competition at the same time as the rising 2Ls. The writing competition timeline for transfer students will be made available in July to those interested.

Permission to Reprint
The Journal has joint copyright with the Author. Permission from both parties must be obtained. The Journal will grant reprint permission so long as the party requesting permission agrees to conspicuously credit the Journal with first publication by displaying the phrase "Originally published in 87 OHIO ST. L.J. ___ (2026)" on the first page of the reprinted material.

The Ohio State Law Journal will be accepting manuscripts beginning in February. Please note that the Journal is no longer accepting manuscripts through ExpressO or mail.
Authors should submit articles to the Journal via Scholastica.
The best time to submit an article is February through early April, and again in early August through early September.
Please include a cover letter with your contact information, including your email address. The Journal primarily uses email to correspond with authors. You may also include a CV with your submission.
The Ohio State Law Journal tends to publish only articles by faculty members and judges, but we are happy to consider articles by practitioners. We only accept scholarly articles of national interest. We do not publish practitioner-oriented articles, articles of only state or local interest, or book reviews. Because we receive more than 2000 submissions each year, we are forced to turn down many fine articles.
