4. Answer the LAW I Questionnaire. The Questionnaire is posted on the course website under “Course Materials” / “First Day Assignments.” Bring a typed copy of your response to the LAW I Questionnaire to the first day of class.

In addition, please read the following case: Gordon v. Steele, 376 F. Supp. 575 (W.D. Pa. 1974). It is not in your casebook. Copies of the case are located in the handout distribution box on the first floor in the hallway between Lou’s Café and the Moritz Copy Center.

6115 - Civil Procedure 1 (Caust-Ellenbogen)

Please sign up for the TWEN for this course.  I will be posting various assignments, supplemental materials, and other things on TWEN.

The syllabus for the course will be posted on TWEN.

The first assignment is to read pp. 1-25 of the Casebook to gain an overview of the topic of Civil Procedure.  There is a lot of information packed into those pages, and I do not expect you to master all of the information.  Read those pages to gain a "big picture" understanding of the topic.

In addition, I want you to read pp. 239-49 of the Casebook very carefully.  We will use the Fuentes case to introduce a number of important concepts that we will cover in greater detail later in the course.  As you read the case, put yourself in the shoes of the parties and the lawyers and try to understand the choices that they made in pursuing their rights in court. 

I expect that we will spend the first few classes discussing various issues that arise in the Fuentes case.  Rest assured that, as the semester goes on, we will move faster through the material.

2.  Before the first class you need to register for the class on The West Educational Network (TWEN).  This is  required.  During orientation you will receive a WestLaw password, and you should use that password to go on TWEN and register for Criminal Law---Dressler.  The website is <http://lawschool.westlaw.com/twen/>.  Once you are registered for Criminal Law-Dressler on TWEN, please go to the Handouts section where you will find two handouts: a syllabus for the entire semester (Class Assignment Sheet), and an important handout entitled "Class Information Sheet."  You should read it over carefully.

(c)  Read Casebook pages xxxi-xxxii and pages 1-12.

(d)  Look at the chart of the criminal justice system (photopied materials, third item) and read the related Note on the Stages of the Criminal Process  (photocopied materials, fourth item).


6127 - Criminal Law (Simmons)

For the first class, please read pages 1-9 in the Dressler casebook. Also, you need to read the FACT SECTION ONLY of the following cases in the Robinson case studies book:

#1 (McCarty); #2 (Landis); #3 (Williams); #4 (Dudley); #5 (Rummel); #8 (Billingslea); #15 (Weaver); #16 (Green); and #22 (Yates).

After you have read the fact section for a case, you should answer the survey question(s) at the end of the section. Do not concern yourself at this point with the applicable law; simply answer the questions based on what you believe to be appropriate.

All students are also required to register for the course on Westlaw's TWEN website. During orientation you will receive a Westlaw password, and you should use that password to log onto TWEN and register for Criminal Law---Simmons. The website is http://lawschool.westlaw.com/twen/

We will be using the TWEN site right away for signups and assignments, so you should register on TWEN before the first class. The syllabus has already been posted to the site; hard copies of the syllabus are also available in the boxes across the hall from the copy center.

Welcome to Legal Negotiations! Before our first day of class, please do the following:

1.  Read pp. 3-25 and pp. 125-130 of the Wiggins text;

2. Read Chapters 1-5 (Parts I ("The Problem") and II ("The Method")) of Getting To Yes;

7406 - Criminal Procedure: Investigation (Dressler)

1.  For first class, from casebook: PP.1-4 (United States Constitution); PP. 5-8 (“Members of the Supreme Court”); PP. 49-55 (ANorms of the Criminal Process@)  This is valuable background.  We will come back to the constitutional language often, of course; the Norms section will help you think about issues we consider all semester; the Members of the Supreme Court chart will help you keep in mind who was sitting on the Court when specific Supreme Court opinions were written—an important factor in analyzing case law.

2. You need to register for our class on TWEN.  Please do so BEFORE our first class.  Once you are registered: (a) go to the HANDOUTS section, where you will find a Class Information Sheet with important information, and a full-semester syllabus (Class Assignment Sheet); and (b) please go to the CUSTOMIZED POLLS section and vote on the poll.  THESE POLLS ARE REQUIRED FOR THE CLASS, and failure to participate in the polls will be considered negatively in the class participation component of the class.

Source materials and introductory matters will be discussed. We will go over general items and a bit of history on the subject matter. There will also be a general discussion concerning the various federal agencies that impact upon the practice of Immigration and Nationality law including the State Department, the Department of Labor, the Justice Department and most importantly Homeland Security.

Class sessions for administrative law will be conducted offline.  That is, except in cases of disability accommodation, students will not be using laptops, tablets or other computing devices during class.  Professor Shane will post to the class web site all slides and notes he shows in class, so that students need not copy them down.

On our first day, we will discuss the "political question doctrine," which concerns the role of the judiciary in election law disputes; this discussion will set the stage for the whole semester.  I look forward to getting started in this exciting election year!

 Read pages 1-44 and Appendix pp. 777-795 for the first class.  A TWEN site has been established for the course so enroll for the class on TWEN.  Scott Lissner will attend the first class to introduce you to an accessibility audit.  Please think about whether you want to conduct an audit or write a seminar paper for this class.  You can work in teams to conduct an audit but each person must submit his or her own written audit if that option is selected.
