Suzanne Barker, Senior Case Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator at Community Mediation Services of Central Ohio, a not-for-profit mediation services provider, graduated from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2003 with the certificate in dispute resolution. An active mediator since 2001, Suzanne has completed over 100 hours of training in mediation and has helped trained hundreds of individuals in dispute resolution and mediation techniques. At CMS, Suzanne mediates cases and trains volunteers in conflict resolution techniques. In addition, Suzanne gives back to her community, coaching law students from both The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and Capital University Law School on advanced mediation techniques and serving her second year as a board member of the Ohio Mediation Association.

According to Suzanne, Moritz’s Program on Dispute Resolution was the primary reason she became interested in law school and why she is a practicing mediator and attorney today. The top notch training she received through the ADR certificate program taught her the skills to empower parties to navigate through their difficult emotions so that they can make long-lasting, important decisions about their lives.

Of her experience at Moritz, Suzanne writes, “Professor Whaley taught me as a first year Contracts student the value of using ADR to help your clients. He stated that if you can help your clients resolve their conflict without going to court, you have served them well.”

“Having this mentality as an attorney influences your clients to look to non-adversarial approaches to their current and future conflicts and spreads the knowledge of the efficacy of ADR techniques. It is the future of litigation and I feel prepared to be on the forefront of that change.”
