Kevin Mahoney '09 Wins CPR Essay Award

Kevin Mahoney '09

Kevin Mahoney ’09 was honored by the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR) with the 2009 award for “Original Student Article or Paper.” Mahoney, an associate with Kenneth M. Sullivan & Associates in Chicago, is honored for a note he wrote in his 2L year at Moritz.

In the note, Mahoney detailed the history of the International Olympics Committee's arbitration procedures regarding substance abuse, how those procedures were deficient, and why they eventually had to be changed. He went on to explain why he feels Major League Baseball's own substance abuse arbitration procedure could benefit from similar changes.

Mahoney was honored during CPR’s annual award reception in New York City on Jan. 13. According to the organization’s web site, these awards recognize innovative processes, techniques, systems, commitment and scholarship in the resolution, prevention and management of major disputes.

While at Moritz, Mahoney was the editor-in-chief of the Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution. He started at Sullivan and Associates, which specializes in commercial litigation, after passing the bar in November.

"The CPR Institute's award for outstanding student article recognizes innovative and original scholarship in the dispute resolution field from students in both law and gradate programs throughout the United States and abroad,” said Sarah Cole, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey Designated Professor of Law at Moritz and the director of the College’s Program on Dispute Resolution. “Winning the CPR student article award is recognition of the value of Kevin's scholarly contribution to the ADR field. We are very proud of Kevin's extraordinary accomplishment."
