Professor Patti Zettler appointed as Deputy General Counsel for U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Professor Patricia (Patti) Zettler has been appointed as Deputy General Counsel to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).  While she serves the nation promoting public health and the rule of law for the Biden-Harris administration, Zettler will be on leave from Ohio State Law. 

“This appointment is an incredible honor and reflects Patti’s deep expertise, legal and policy acumen, extensive work in food and drug regulation, and her stature in the field of health law,” said Dean Lincoln Davies.  

The Office of the General Counsel for HHS provides representation and legal advice on a wide range of highly visible national issues. The office supports the development and implementation of HHS programs by providing the highest quality legal services to the Secretary of HHS and the organization's various agencies and divisions. 

Zettler is the John W. Bricker Professor of Law, a member of the Drug Enforcement & Policy Center at Moritz College of Law, and a member of the Cancer Control Program at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. A nationally recognized expert on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and food and drug law, she has written over 60 articles that have appeared in scientific journals and traditional law reviews.
