Entrepreneurs and Executives Series: Panel Talk with Executives of Jeni’s Ice Cream and Stanley Steemer and Vorys Partner Herb Hedden

This is the first panel discussion of the Entrepreneurs and Executives Series of the program on Law, Finance and Governance. Discussing their companies and franchising will be Philip Ryser, Executive Vice President at Stanley Steemer International, Inc. and John Lowe, CEO at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, executives who are also attorneys, joined by Herbert A. Hedden, Partner, Vorys Columbus, who has been named one of the The Best Lawyers in America, Franchise Law, from 1997-2015. The attorneys will also discuss their legal and business careers, offering insight into being a business executive with a legal background.

Philip Ryser is Executive Vice President at Stanley Steemer International, Inc., a Dublin, Ohio-based company that has been family-owned and led since 1947. The national company has over 300 locations in 48 states. Ryser, who has been with the company for over three decades, also serves as General Counsel of the company.  Ryser earned a BA from Case Western Reserve University, and a JD from The Ohio State University.

John Lowe is CEO at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, an artisan ice-cream company centered in Columbus, Ohio, with national distribution. Lowe is also CEO of Eat Well Distribution. Previously, Lowe served as General Counsel for GE Aviation and Unison Industries, an attorney with Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter, and a writer for the American Bar Association. Lowe earned a BA from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign  and a JD from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.

Herbert A. Hedden is a Partner at Vorys Columbus office who practices in the area of commercial law with a strong emphasis on franchising and distribution law. He has represented a leading U.S. retailer in establishing franchise relationships with local franchisees in several foreign countries; represented a leading franchisor in the home services industry in the establishment of a national advertising program; and represented a leading Central Ohio condominium developer in the development of the first ever program to franchise a condominium development business. Hedden’s awards include: The Best Lawyers in America, Columbus Franchise Law “Lawyer of the Year,” 2015; Columbus CEO, Top Lawyers in Columbus, 2010-2015; The Best Lawyers in America, Franchise Law, 1997-2015. Hedden earned a B.S  from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, an M.P.P. from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a J.D. from The George Washington University Law School.
