Federal Bar Association Columbus Chapter 2019 Scholarship Program
In cooperation with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, the Federal Bar Association Columbus Chapter Scholarship Program seeks to provide financial support to students of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and Capital University Law School and to provide them with the opportunity to serve as judicial externs for the Judges and Magistrate Judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio in Columbus.
The Program has two separate elements. FBA Extern Scholars will: (1) receive a $5,000 scholarship; and (2) be provided an opportunity to extern with the Court. The FBA Extern Scholars will serve in one or more of the chambers chosen by the Court. The optional externship is available to be completed by the end of the 2019-2020 school year. The scholarship and uncompensated externship are separate awards issued to scholar externs. The scholarship does not constitute compensation. Whether a student receives law school class credit for an externship is at the discretion of that student’s law school.
Scholarships will be awarded to current first- or second-year law students (i.e., students who will still be in school during the 2019-2020 academic year) from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and/or Capital University Law School on the basis of academic merit, financial need, character, and who could contribute to the diversity of those students serving as externs with the Court. Any law student who meets this criteria may apply.
By the application deadline, applicants must submit a completed application form and all supporting materials to the law school faculty or administration member designated as the FBA Extern Scholar contact person. (At Moritz, that designated administrator is Beth Watkins.) No late applications will be accepted.
Subsequent to the application deadline, select applicants will be contacted for an interview with the Scholarship Selection Committee, which is composed of members of the Court and the Federal Bar Association Columbus Chapter. The Committee anticipates selecting two or more 2019 FBA Extern Scholars but will award fewer scholarships if an insufficient number of applicants warrant an award.
The deadline for applying for a scholarship is March 1, 2019. Moritz students can find additional information, including application materials, on Symplicity.
