On Sept. 22, William M. Isaac '69, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation during the banking and savings and loan crisis of the 1980s, will explain what was different about the 2008 economic meltdown that allowed the failure of a comparative handful of financial institutions to nearly shut down the world's financial system. In a speech at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, Isaac will discuss and take questions about what mistakes led to the panic of 2008 and 2009, demystify the conditions America faced in 2008, and provide a roadmap for avoiding similar shutdowns and panics in the future.

The free event, which is cosponsored by Moritz and The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business, will be in Saxbe Auditorium in Drinko Hall starting at 1:45 p.m. A limited number of copies of Isaac's new book, Senseless Panic: How Washington Failed America, will be distributed for free on a first-come, first-served basis. Free registration (see below) for the event is required. Coffee and snacks will be served.

Isaac, a 1969 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Law, is currently chairman of Fifth Third Bank's Board of Directors and chairman of global financial services of LECG. Isaac has been actively involved through congressional testimony and consultation in the policy response to the 2008 economic crisis and is a frequent commentator on CNBC, as well as in the pages of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other leading publications.

Isaac also serves on boards of several other businesses and nonprofit organizations. He is chairman of his family's various real estate development companies, a founding member of the American Bankers Council, and a member of the Board of Directors for the BankCap Investment Fund.
