Increasing Access to Justice: ADR and Digitisation within the English and Welsh Civil Justice System

Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at 12:10pm in Room 245

The English civil justice system is currently experiencing major and radical reforms in an effort to try to increase access to justice. Policymakers and members of the senior judiciary are increasingly focusing on the use of digital platforms and the integration of alternative dispute resolution procedures to manage and resolve disputes more efficiently. Major procedural reforms include the implementation of Online Civil Money Claims (OCMC) and the Damages Claims Portal, as well as the Civil Justice Council reports on Compulsory ADR and the Pre-action Protocols. This lecture will provide a critical review of the latest English civil justice reforms and consider some of the opportunities and challenges for the future.

Masood Ahmed, Associate Professor of Law, University of Leicester
