Increasing Access to Justice: ADR and Digitisation within the English and Welsh Civil Justice System

The English civil justice system is currently experiencing major and radical reforms in an effort to try to increase access to justice. Policymakers and members of the senior judiciary are increasingly focusing on the use of digital platforms and the integration of alternative dispute resolution procedures to manage and resolve disputes more efficiently. Major procedural reforms include the implementation of Online Civil Money Claims (OCMC) and the Damages Claims Portal, as well as the Civil Justice Council reports on Compulsory ADR and the Pre-action Protocols. This lecture will provide a critical review of the latest English civil justice reforms and consider some of the opportunities and challenges for the future.
Masood Ahmed, Associate Professor of Law, University of Leicester
Masood Ahmed is Associate Professor of Law at the University of Leicester (UK). He is widely published in the areas of civil procedure, civil justice systems and reform, ADR and international commercial arbitration. He served as a member of the Civil Procedure Rule Committee (CPRC) and is currently part of the Main Working Party of the Civil Justice Council (CJC) which is advising the Master of the Rolls on a major review and reform of the pre-action protocols. He is a commentator of The White Book (the leading text on the English Civil Procedure Rules), the ADR editor of the Civil Justice Quarterly, and an editor of the Journal of Personal Injury Law. He is also a Research Fellow on the ‘Affordable Access to Justice’ project at the Erasmus University (Netherlands) and a member of the European Law Institute’s ‘Civil Courts Digitisation’ project.

Our Assistant Dean for Graduate and International Affairs, Tra Pham, will be present to converse with you about our application process, scholarships, LLM curriculum, Moritz faculty and their expertise, bar exams in the U.S., student support (career advising, mentoring programs, and free bar exam prep course), and how to navigate career opportunities in Ohio as well as in the U.S.
