The International and Graduate Affairs Office of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and the Southwest University of Political Science and Law (SWUPL) have partnered to waive the program fee for a summer exchange program for up to 6 Moritz students. Located in Chongqing, the two-week law program is designed for law students from all over the world to experience SWUPL, Chinese culture, society, and academic life. Moritz students will have the opportunity to experience legal, social, and cultural differences both in the study of law and in student life. No Chinese language skills are necessary to participate, as all of the seminars are offered in English. The short format allows Moritz students to work or do internships between semesters, all while taking advantage of studying abroad.

About the University

Southwest University of Political Science and Law is located in Chongqing City, the upstream area of Yangtze River. Currently there are two campuses in SWUPL, of which the main campus is in Yubei District, and the other one is in Shapingba District, covering a total area of more than 3000 mu (approximately 500 acres, or 2 km2). Yubei campus is the education center for undergraduates and postgraduates, while Shapinba campus is founded for continuing education and cadre training, now the enrolled students are more than 25000 and staff are more than 2300 in total. SWUPL gives priority to legal science, seeks multi-disciplinary coordinated development of philosophy, economics, literature,management and engineering, etc., with economic law and procedural law as national key programs. A multi-level and multi-type pattern of fostering talents from undergraduates, postgraduates, doctoral education, continuing education to education oriented to overseas students has been founded. Applicant Eligibility

1L, 2L, and LL.M. students are eligible to apply. Those students with an interest in International and Comparative Law will receive preference, but all students are encouraged to apply.

Program Costs

Program Fee: waived for Moritz students

Office of International Affairs Study Abroad program Fee: $150

Housing: provided by SWUPL

International Travel: approximately $1000

Passport (if needed): approximately $150

Visa (required): approximately $150

Supplemental Health Insurance: approximately $40/month

Financial Aid: Eligible for Vogel International Fellowship (up to $1,000).

Students should also budget additional amounts for miscellaneous expenses, and must have primary health insurance. Housing, airport pick-up and drop-off, a food allowance, and field trips (excluding ticket price for Dazu Rock Carvings) are included in the program fee. Students are responsible for any personal trips or excursions.

Housing and Room and Board

Students are housed on campus in university dorms for the duration of the program. Students are given a 400RMB allowance for food, but many students have found that their appetites exceed this allowance.

Passport and Visa

China requires U.S. citizens to carry a valid U.S. passport and visa when traveling to China for any purpose. Visas are available through a number of travel and visa agencies in Columbus, including Fun Travel Service in Dublin, OH. Required Supplemental Health Insurance

While participating in an Ohio State study abroad program, students are required to maintain their primary insurance coverage. Students are also required to apply for and purchase supplemental insurance through GeoBlue for the duration of the program. Once accepted to the program, you will be sent a link to complete the supplemental health insurance application.

Application Requirements

Please submit the application on the Moritz Education Abroad Website, along with a 500-word statement of interest, to the International and Graduate Affairs office via email using the contact information below.

Application Deadline

Applications are due by March 1. Once students have been “pre-approved” for the program by the Moritz Assistant Dean of International and Graduate Affairs, students will be asked to fill-out a separate application for the OSU Office of International Affairs.

Decision Timeline

Students will be notified of their acceptance to the program from Moritz College of Law by March 31

Pre-Departure Orientation

All Ohio State students participating in any OSU sponsored study abroad program must attend a pre-departure orientation organized by the Office of International Affairs. Possible dates for this orientation will be shared with students once they are accepted to the program.
