Professor Amna Akbar featured in pair of New York-based media outlets discussing “Defund the Police”
Professor Amna Akbar, an expert in the area of race and inequality, was featured twice in the New York-area media last week.
Akbar published an op-ed in the New York Review of Books titled, “How Defund and Disband Became the Demands,” and was also featured on a podcast on WNYC Studios titled, “Why Activists Are Demanding That Cities ‘Defund the Police.'”
“The demands to defund and dismantle reflect a growing consensus about the failures of neoliberalism, the contradictions of capitalism, and the violence of white supremacy,” Akbar wrote in her op-ed. “While it is unclear whether all those carrying placards emblazoned with today’s slogans fully grasp the transformative project of abolition, these mass protests point to a growing understanding that the problem is not police training or inadequate technology.”
