A message from the faculty at Moritz
To our Moritz Community,
We were deeply saddened and troubled to learn of the shootings in Atlanta, Georgia this week. Hate-driven attacks against Asian and Asian-American people have drastically increased over the past year. We are angry, outraged, and heartbroken at these developments and the culmination of bigotry and xenophobia in our nation they represent.
We stand—resolutely and unequivocally—against racism, bigotry, and white supremacy in every form. No one should be subject to violence or incidents of hate.
For our community members who are living with an increased sense of visibility and vulnerability at this time, please know that we see you, and we support you. We hope that you feel able to draw on that support.
During COVID, incidents of racially-motivated violence come at a time of already heightened stress and strain. Please take advantage of the options available to you. For students looking for opportunities to seek additional mental health support, services are available through the Office of Student Life Counseling and Consultation Services (ccs.osu.eduor 614-292-5766). For anyone who feels uncomfortable or unsafe on or around campus, Ohio State’s escort service is available starting at 6 p.m. each day; they can be reached at 614-292-3322.
For students looking to process recent events or to share ongoing issues in our community, Dean Northern and Professor Conway are available for office hours (sign up here) at the following times:
- Mondays 1-2:30 pm
- Tuesdays 10-11 am
- Thursdays 10-11 am, 3-5 pm
- Fridays 10-12 pm
The Multi-Cultural Center staff also will be hosting a space for healing and action for APIDA students, staff, and faculty later today at 4:30 pm (register here), and you may of course always schedule time with Dean Nealy.
At this painful time, we reiterate our condemnation of racism, discrimination, scapegoating, and violence. We stand with our students and our colleagues in doing so, and embrace the affirmative obligation we all share at Ohio State Law to fight prejudice and inequality in society. We are grateful, as always, for your presence in our community and your commitment to doing this work with us.
