Alumni can make tax-free gifts from IRAs in 2013

Alumni over the age of 70½ are eligible to make a gift the Moritz College of Law directly from individual retirement accounts (IRAs) by Dec. 31 without undesirable tax effects.

IRA charitable rollover legislation allows those who are 70½ or older to transfer gifts up to $100,000 from their accounts. Pensions, profit-sharing, 401(k), 403(b), and other types of retirement funds do not qualify.

The benefits of giving this way include:

  • seeing your philanthropic dollars at work;
  • jump-starting your legacy;
  • avoiding income taxes on the gift; and
  • counting the gift toward your minimum distribution.

Funds of $100,000 or less may be given this year, but they must be transferred directly from the IRA. For more information on how to donate to the Moritz College of Law, contact Senior Director of Development Erin Neal at (614) 247-2538 or
