Moritz Needs Volunteer Supreme Court Justices

The Moritz College of Law is seeking approximately 70 attorneys to judge the oral arguments of second-year students in Professor Beazley’s mandatory Appellate Advocacy course. Students in the course research and write a brief for a case currently pending before the U.S. Supreme Court and then argue their cases in front of a panel of judges.

We need you to join our “Supreme Court of Moritz” panels. As a judge, your responsibilities would include asking questions and providing critiques to help give students a positive oral argument experience. The oral arguments will be graded by adjunct professors who co-teach the course, so you would not be asked to do any grading. Prior to the oral arguments, judges will receive a copy of the students’ briefs whose arguments they are hearing and bench materials outlining the case. Judges will even get their own judicial nameplates (it will be paper instead of bronze, but it is the thought that counts)!

This year students will be arguing one of the following cases: U.S. v. Stevens, Pottawattamie Co. v. McGhee, Sullivan v. Florida, and Mohawk Indus. v. Carpenter.

The oral arguments are scheduled from 6-9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9, Tuesday, Nov. 10, Thursday, Nov. 12, Monday, Nov. 16, Tuesday, Nov. 17, and Wednesday, Nov. 18. If you are interested in serving as a justice, please e-mail 3L Alexandra Tuffuor at alexandratuffuor@gmail.com. Please be sure to include your name, contact information, and the date(s) you are available.

We hope you can join us on the bench!
