How an Ohio State LL.M. Strengthens Your Career

Graduates of the LL.M. program benefit from comprehensive training in American law and legal institutions—knowledge increasingly important in today’s global legal and economic landscape. The program introduces students to U.S. legal reasoning and analytical methods, which may differ significantly from the legal systems in many other countries. This expertise enhances graduates’ credentials and widens their opportunities in international law firms, corporations, government roles, and nonprofit organizations.

The LL.M. degree is a widely recognized professional credential that supports long‑term advancement and demonstrates readiness to engage in cross‑border legal work.

Work Opportunities During the Program

LL.M. students are permitted to work on campus while enrolled. Because the program is full‑time and academically demanding, students are encouraged to limit employment to no more than 10 hours per week to maintain a healthy balance between academic responsibilities and professional experience.

F-1 On-Campus Employment

F-1 students may work up to 20 hours per week on campus when classes are in session and up to 38 hours per week during semester breaks and students’ annual vacation term.

On-campus employment includes work as a teaching or research assistant and jobs in the school library, cafeteria and administrative offices.

Recruiting and On‑Campus Employer Engagement 

Employers who visit the Moritz College of Law for on‑campus interviews typically focus on recruiting J.D. students; however, LL.M. students may participate in interviews with employers who specifically indicate an interest in LL.M. candidates. Although these opportunities are more limited, students are encouraged to monitor employer requests and take advantage of available recruitment events.

Understanding the U.S. Job Market for International Attorneys

The LL.M. degree is best pursued with goals of academic enrichment, exposure to the American legal system, and international career enhancement. While valuable, the degree does not guarantee long‑term employment in the United States, as opportunities for foreign‑trained attorneys can be highly competitive and limited. 

A successful job search often requires continuous, proactive outreach. Many LL.M. students report finding positions through direct contact with employers, networking, and leveraging connections within the legal community. Persistence and early planning are essential.

Career Support for LL.M. Students

The Office of International and Graduate Affairs provides dedicated support to LL.M. students throughout their job search. Staff offer individualized guidance on résumé and cover letter development, networking strategies, and interview preparation. While students are encouraged to take the lead in their job‑search process, program advisors play an important role in helping them navigate opportunities and craft effective approaches.
