New York Bar Requirements
New York Court of Appeals Rule 520.18 establishes a “skills competency and professional values requirement” for admission to practice in New York State. Moritz’s Registrar will certify compliance with “Pathway One” of that requirement for students who complete the pathway components adopted by the Moritz faculty in June 2018. These components embody the Moritz College of Law’s seven learning goals:
- Legal Doctrine and Substantive Knowledge
- Ability to Use Law-Related Materials and Processes
- Critical Thinking and Problem-solving
- Communication
- Skills for Continued Development (Meta-cognition)
- Interpersonal Skills and Professionalism
- Professional Judgment
Moritz faculty have developed nineteen learning outcomes to accompany these learning goals. Based on this work, the faculty determined that graduates are prepared for “basic competence and ethical participation in the legal profession” (22 NYCRR 520.18[a][1][i][a]) if they:
- (a) Satisfy the degree requirements for the JD or LLM, and
- (b) Achieve a passing grade in the coursework specified below. Note that a student may not use the same course to satisfy more than one of the coursework categories.
