The Center on Responsible AI and Governance will be the first NSF-funded Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) to focus specifically on developing the knowledge and workforce required to pursue artificial intelligence that is safe, accurate, impartial, and accountable; in a word, “responsible.” By advancing AI’s safety and trustworthiness, CRAIG will increase AI’s adoption and so will promote U.S. competitiveness, national security, and societal values.
CRAIG will partner with industry to carry out work in three key areas
Collaborative research on the technological solutions required to achieve responsible AI. This includes techniques for privacy-protective and secure data analysis and systems, impartial and explainable AI, and auditing of AI systems.
Research on the law, policy, ethics, and management of AI to identify evidence-based AI governance best practices, align them with the emerging legal framework, and assess their impact on business value.
CRAIG will facilitate industry access to talent by training current and future professionals, researchers, and students in the emerging regulations, standards and best practices for responsible AI, and by connecting them with industry.
CRAIG is an Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC)
Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) the IUCRC program brings together academic researchers, industry partners, and government to conduct pre-competitive, applied research in areas of mutual interest.

How to Join
The members of an Industry–University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) drive the Center’s success. Members fund and vote on research projects of mutual interest and participate in Center governance though an Industry Advisory Board (IAB). Public, private, and non profit organizations can join as Full or Associate members.
