Education offers individuals the necessary skills and training to succeed in life and society. At Ohio State, law students have ample opportunities to study a range of legal and policy problems in American elementary and secondary education, including equal educational opportunity, the no Child Left behind Act, school disciplinary processes, school finance, segregation and desegregation, special education, and governance of private educational institutions. Core courses include education Law, Special education Advocacy, and Nonprofit Organizations. Students considering a career in education law often study related issues such as civil rights, employment law, health law, immigration law, labor law, and law and religion.
Professor Ruth Colker, a distinguished university professor (Ohio State's highest faculty honor), is known as a trailblazer in the field of special education. her path-breaking research on legal issues affecting individuals with physical disabilities, dyslexia, learning disabilities, and other issues is well-known. She teaches Special education Advocacy, a course which is a hybrid between a seminar and a clinical experience. Students learn about and practice representation in a special education case, including educational evaluations and assessments, the individualized educational programs, early intervention services, school discipline, the due process complaint, and remedies.
The education Law Society, originally founded by a group of law students who were also Teach For America alumni, offers networking, special events, and lectures throughout the school year.
