Washington, D.C., Summer Program
Washington, D.C., Summer Program
In 2010, The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law will, for the eighth consecutive year, welcome students to its Washington, D.C., Summer Law Program. Because Program Director Peter Swire has taken a leave to work in President Barack Obama’s Administration, the College has entered into a partnership with The George Washington University Law School to help administer the program.
Twenty Moritz students will have the opportunity to work in substantive, legal externships in D.C. while benefiting from a high-quality academic program and a summer in the nation's capital. The program begins May 17, 2010 and lasts 6 ½ weeks.
Generally, students will enroll in two, 2-credit courses taught by George Washington Law faculty. One is a course in professional responsibility and the second – Government Lawyering, Craft of Judging, or Public Interest Lawyering – is a co-requisite course determined by the student’s externship. Students should expect to attend a professional responsibility course twice a week from 6-8 p.m. and the second course twice a week from 6-8 p.m. Other co-requisite options may be offered in the summer of 2010, such as Congressional, Criminal Justice, Environmental, or Government Contract tutorials. If a student selects a 1 credit co-requisite course, then he or she may seek two credits for the externship experience.
Enrollees will be required to secure an externship (worth 1 credit) in a government, judicial, or nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C. In previous years, students have worked in major federal agencies and nonprofit groups that are often national leaders in their fields. The externship will be for at least 20 hours per week for the program’s duration. Externs will be supervised by licensed attorneys, and the supervisors will be required to provide assurance that the externship will be comprised of substantive legal or legislative work.
