Web Profile

The Hon. Deanell Reece Tacha, a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, will speak on "The Rule of Law." She will also teach a one-credit course on the same topic as part of the Schottenstein Zox & Dunn's Distinguished Jurist in Residence Program the week of February 25.

“Judge Tacha is just the type of guest that we hoped the Distinguished Practioner in Residence Program would attract,” Dean Nancy H. Rogers said. “Students will have the opportunity to interact with and learn from a very successful and accomplished attorney and judge.” She was nominated by Ronald Reagan in 1985 to her judicial seat. She received commission later that year, and she served as chief judge between 2001 and 2007.

Judge Tacha received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and her law degree from the University of Michigan Law School. After law school, she served as a White House fellow, special assistant to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor.

She then worked in private practice in Washington, D.C., and Concordia, Kansas. She also was the director of the Douglas County Legal Aid Clinic for three years. She is a former faculty member and vice chancellor of the University of Kansas School of Law. Between 1994 and 1998, Tacha was a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.
