LL.M. Programming and Student Support
The Moritz College of Law provides a variety of opportunities to assist the LL.M. student during his or her time here.
LL.M. Advisory Council
In the fall of 2007, Moritz created an Advisory Council for the LL.M. program. The LL.M. Advisory Council is a group of 17 practitioners; it is a diverse group, including private law firm practitioners, in-house counsel, and those from the public sector. All individuals on the Council have significant levels of international involvement by either the individual or his or her organization. This past year, the Council met in October and February The first meeting primarily introduced Council members to the LL.M. program; the second meeting focused on post-graduate externships.
The Council has scheduled a September 2008 reception at Kegler Brown Hill & Ritter for the new members of the Class of 2009. Council members have agreed to participate upon request as class guest lecturers and to help LL.M. graduates find externships.
J.D. Liaison
We recruit J.D. students to become J.D. Liaisons to the LL.M. students in an effort to expand the cross-cultural benefits of the LL.M. program beyond the classroom. We ask the liaisons to spend time with an LL.M. student, helping him or her to understand the routine at Moritz, introducing them to other students, and providing peer support as needed. The liaison relationship provides the J.D. student with some exposure to the legal system of another culture and gives the LL.M. student support and a chance to practice their English skills. The LL.M. students meet their J.D. Liaisons during orientation and continue involvement with the LL.M. students throughout the school year.
Lunch Series with LL.M. Students
Developing a high-quality LL.M. program entails looking beyond the classroom. As a result, we decided to begin a bi-weekly brown bag lunch series with the LL.M. students. A primary focus of the series is academic advising and career counseling; for example, Professor Greenbaum talked with the students about how to take a law school examination. We also brought in members of the bench and bar to speak with the students about the practice of law in the United States. Overall, these sessions were very positive, the students fully participated and we will continue them in the future.
