Master of Laws (LL.M.)
LL.M. Student Life
The value of an LL.M. program does not exist solely in the academic curriculum. Of great importance is the opportunity to become immersed in American culture, create a new professional network, improve English speaking skills and make friends that will last a lifetime.
Use the links at left to learn about our community, and hear directly from former students what it is like to be a part of the Moritz community. We are located in Columbus, the capital of Ohio, which has many of the same amenities found in larger cities. It offers an excellent standard of living, at a much lower cost. Our graduates look back on their life here with fondness, having gained much more than just a degree.
The Moritz College of Law is part of one of the greatest public research universities in the United States--The Ohio State University. Please use the links below to learn more about our great campus.

You are receiving this email from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law because you have expressed an interest in attaining an LL.M. degree. As we begin a series of monthly emails to prospective applicants, we invite you to consider applying to our program.
At Moritz, we understand that choosing the right LL.M. program is a difficult decision. We have great respect and admiration for your decision to spend a year away from friends and family, studying the legal systems, history and culture of another country. Here are a few reasons why we believe an LL.M. from Ohio State is the best choice.
At The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, we often say that our learning environment is second to none. That's not just a marketing slogan. Our professors are experts in their fields, and are called on by media outlets large and small to add to the national discussion of important legal issues. As the debate evolves, so does their scholarship. In the classroom, they strive each day to create an atmosphere of mutual respect, where J.D. and LL.M. students alike share their ideas for the benefit of all. Moritz is a place where collegiality is more important than competition, where the success of each student matters.
Students cannot succeed without support. The Moritz LL.M. Program is intentionally limited to 25 students, so that staff can provide unparalleled support and guidance. From our comprehensive orientation to our sessions held throughout the year, our activities offer an element crucial to understanding the information presented in class: context. No question on the law—or American life—is too small for us to answer.
We know that your time here is not just about classes. We create opportunities for LL.M. students to gather informally, relax and have a good time. One of our fall favorites is traveling to a farm to pick (and eat!) apples. Spending time together helps students realize they are not alone. Together, we are like a family.
The Ohio State University name is known and respected as one of the top-ranked public research universities in the United States. Its 500,000 alumni, known as Buckeyes, live and work around the globe. One of the favorite ways to show affection for our alma mater is to make the O-H-I-O, where four friends stand together to make the letters. Visit the O-H-I-O site to see poses taken in your home country!
At Moritz, you will experience more than just classes. Consider applying today, and join our community of scholars.

At The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, we often say that our learning environment is second to none. Our faculty has an excellent reputation for scholarship and teaching of course, but their greatest pride comes from our collegial atmosphere. Each professor is committed to creating an environment where diversity of opinion and experience are valued.
Likewise, the LL.M. program staff provides exceptional support for our students, to help ensure their success. We offer guidance on career goals, and on navigating a new culture. We provide fun outings and activities to build a sense of community, where students develop new friendships that will last a lifetime. We understand that Ohio State is not just a place to spend a year—it becomes your second home.
This month, J.D. and LL.M. students alike enjoyed activities in celebration of International Education Week. They brought dishes from their home countries for an international potluck, shared mementos for a display case of global treasures (see below), and viewed the groundbreaking documentary “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” which chronicled Liberian women’s struggle to end their country’s civil war by peaceful means. Events like these bring people closer together, as we recognize that our differences don’t divide us, but rather contribute to a vibrant, diverse community.
Last week, we gathered for a holiday that is very special to Americans. We celebrated Thanksgiving with not just one but two special occasions. Moritz students, faculty and staff attended a Thanksgiving luncheon at the college, and collected $700 and over 600 pounds of food for the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. The university hosted a Thanksgiving dinner as well, attended by 1,600 international and domestic students who could not travel home to be with their families. You can see photos of that event here.
Finally, the Thanksgiving holiday weekend saw much rejoicing as our Ohio State Buckeye football team beat arch rival University of Michigan, finishing the season undefeated. Nothing unites us like cheering on our Buckeyes!
We hope this gives you just a small taste of Moritz in the fall—our favorite time of year. You can learn more about our LL.M. program, our college and the university at our website. You can also see previous newsletters here.

Thank you for expressing an interest in The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law LL.M. Program for foreign lawyers. We know that choosing the right LL.M. program can be difficult. The following are just a few examples of some of the special things happening in our program, and our law school. We hope they will spark your desire to learn more.
We are especially proud of our faculty, whose creativity and insight go beyond textbook learning. Top business professor Steven M. Davidoff offered students the opportunity to engage with top practitioners in his innovative Capital Markets seminar. Hosting experts such as Laura Holleman, managing director at Goldman Sachs, and Michael Segal, of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, allowed students to see not only what it is like to be practicing corporate law, but also to engage with top-flight academics on theoretical and empirical questions concerning our capital markets. Read more about the class and featured speakers here.
Our faculty have been recognized outside the classroom as well. In November, Professor Peter Swire was chosen to take over as co-chairman of the Tracking Protection Working Group of the international World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C. The W3C has been trying for months to develop technical “Do Not Track” standards, to respond to consumers’ online tracking choices. Industry executives currently use data about consumers’ online activities to tailor their marketing pitches. Privacy advocates maintain that internet users should have a way to opt out of this kind of tracking. Professor Swire, who will co-chair the group with Intel’s Matthias Schunter, has a long record of experience in following online-privacy issues. He served as privacy adviser to President Clinton and as a special assistant on President Obama’s National Economic Council from 2009-2010.
With the presidential election this fall, the faculty of the Election Law @ Moritz (EL@M) program were especially busy. EL@M is the Moritz College of Law’s nonpartisan research, education, and outreach program, and the nation’s premiere center of election law expertise. A delegation of law students and faculty from the University of Qatar made a special trip to Columbus on Election Day, November 6, so they could watch election results in our bellwether state of Ohio. Their visit illustrated why a program like EL@M is a critical resource for election officials, policymakers and other civic leaders, journalists, and the lawyers who respond to the disputes that invariably arise in a democracy that elects its leaders. Qatar’s dean of law, Dr. Hassan Okour, said, “This trip… was of great significance given the huge attention given to elections in the Arab world recently and especially in Qatar which will witness its first Advisory Council elections next year.”
Our Associate Dean for International and Graduate Programs, Daniel C.K. Chow, returned recently from a whirlwind visit to China, where he finalized agreements of cooperation with law schools in Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Changsha, and Guangzhou. Dean Chow is an expert in China, foreign trade and investments, and international intellectual property. His International Trade Law casebook is now in its second edition (Aspen, 2012).
Lastly, we enjoyed a visit this fall from Jerónimo Castro, executive director for Colfuturo. The Moritz College of Law has entered in to an agreement of cooperation with the program, which aims to provide scholarships for graduate study to students from Colombia.
It’s impossible to give a complete picture in just a few short emails, but we welcome the chance to try. We encourage you to learn more about our program at our website, including previous newsletters which you can find here.
Please note that our office will be closed for the winter holidays December 21 through January 6. We will have intermittent access to email during that time, so please allow us a few extra days to respond to your questions.
Finally, please accept our best wishes for a healthy and happy 2013!
