Lawrence Negotiation Competition October 17-20

The annual Lawrence Negotiation Competition took place October 17-20 this year. The competition is a chance for any student interested in negotiation to hone his or her skills; the winners and runners up qualify as Moritz’s representatives in the regional ABA Law Student Division Negotiation Competition and can move on to the national competition.

During the competition, teams of two law students, working as advocates for a fictitious client, negotiate against one another. They are judged on their ability to work together, establish rapport with the opposing team, and maximize the interests of their client. Every team competes in the first two rounds, after which the competition becomes single elimination.

The Lawrence Negotiation Competition is open to all 2L and 3L Moritz law students, and participation is required for students in Professor Josh Stulberg’s Negotiation class. This year’s competition is the largest ever, with 100 students competing in teams of two.

“The competition is a great chance for students to gain experience in negotiation in a professional environment,” says Rishi Batra, Langdon Fellow in Dispute Resolution and coach of the ABA Negotiation teams. “The substantive problems allow participants to think through preparation, strategy, and real time negotiation considerations. And the feedback from dispute resolution professionals who serve as judges provide wonderful guidance for improvement.”

The winning teams represent the law school at the Region 6 Negotiation Competition, which will take place November 12-13 at University of Ottawa Faculty of Law in Ottawa, Ontario. Twenty teams are scheduled for the regional, from 10 different law schools. Regional winners go on to the national competition in 2012.

The Lawrence Negotiation Competition is made possible through the generosity of James K.L. Lawrence, class of 1965.
