Lawrence Negotiation Lecture explores Negotiations in College Sports

The annual Lawrence Negotiation Lecture this year featured Julie Vannatta, who will be speaking on “Negotiations in the World of Athletics.” Ms. Vannatta is Senior Associate Athletics Director—Legal and Senior Assistant General Counsel for Athletics at The Ohio State University and concentrates her practice on legal issues affecting the Department of Athletics. The lecture took place on October 11, and students interested in the Dispute Resolution Certificate will be given an hour of externship credit if they attended the lecture.

As a former student at Moritz, Ms. Vannatta is still remembered fondly. “Julie is a former negotiations student of mine. She is an outstanding speaker, negotiator, lawyer, mentor, and person. I’m certain that the students will find her presentation extremely worthwhile,” says Professor Charles Wilson, Associate Professor of Law.

Ms. Vannatta received her B.A. from Miami University (Ohio) in 1984, and her J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 1987. Ms. Vannatta was a member of the Ohio State Law Journal and received the Rebecca Topper Memorial Award for outstanding writing contribution to the Law Journal. Prior to joining the University in Athletics, she worked at Thompson, Hine and Flory, focusing in the area of commercial litigation.

Ms. Vannatta has been the Chair of the Young Lawyers’ Committee of the Columbus Bar Association, the Chair of the Ohio State Bar Association’s Sport and Entertainment Law Committee, and the Co-Chair of the National Association of College and University Attorney’s Athletics’ section. She also serves as a member of the NCAA’s General Counsel Advisory Board. In 2009, she was named one of Columbus’ “Top Lawyers” by Columbus C.E.O. magazine.

The Program on Dispute Resolution offers the annual Lawrence Negotiation Lecture in coordination with the Lawrence Negotiation Competition. Each year, the Program hosts a speaker with a distinguished career as a negotiator. This year’s speaker will provide a particularly relevant talk for students who are preparing to participate in the Competition.

The Lawrence Lecture and Negotiation Competition are named in honor of James K. L. Lawrence, class of 1965, a partner with Frost Brown Todd in Cincinnati. Following graduation from law school, Mr. Lawrence worked as an attorney at the National Labor Relations Board. He left the Board to join his firm and, for more than 30 years, has practiced labor-relations and employment law. He is a skilled advocate in arbitration and an astute negotiator in collective bargaining and settlement discussions. He has given generously of his time, talent, guidance and resources to Moritz, including teaching the annual Negotiation and Mediation Advocacy course over the Fall Break.
