Professor Stulberg Invested as Michael E. Moritz Professor in ADR

In a ceremony marked by laughter and song, Professor Joseph (“Josh”) Stulberg was awarded the Michael E. Moritz Chair in Alternative Dispute Resolution at the Barrister Club on October 3, 2013. Many of his current and former students, as well as his family and colleagues, were on hand to witness the occasion.

Professor Stulberg spoke about the major influences in his life and his quest for a more balanced and inclusive justice system using music as a theme in a brief presentation entitled “Songs of Justice Making.” Most notable among his anecdotes was a description of his involvement in resolving a disputed land claim between members of the Mohawk tribe in the Adirondacks and New York State officials in the 1970’s. Professor Stulberg played a pivotal role in these negotiations and spoke to the power of direct communication in dispute resolution, concluding his presentation with an ADR-themed version of “Carmen Ohio.”

This investiture is the most recent in a series of accolades for Professor Stulberg, who is widely recognized as a distinguished mediation and ADR author and practitioner. He was selected for the honor one year ago, but his investiture was delayed since he was serving as the Ikerbasque Fellow at the University of Duesto Law School in Bilbao, Spain. The Michael E. Moritz Chair in Alternative Dispute Resolution was established as a result of the unprecedented generosity of the late Michael E. Moritz, class of 1961, and his family in 2001. Mrs. Lou Ann Moritz Ransom and other members of the Moritz family were in attendance to show their continued support of one of the many fellowships that bear the Moritz name.
