Renowned Victim Compensation Expert, Ken Feinberg, to Speak October 25 on “Unconventional Responses to Unique Catastrophes”

Imagine some of the biggest national tragedies and scandals of the past two decades: 9/11, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Jerry Sandusky’s sex crimes, the Aurora, Colorado shootings. The common denominator in all of them: Kenneth R. Feinberg has been brought in to advise on victim compensation.

This year’s 2012 Lawrence Negotiation Lecture will feature Feinberg speaking on “Unconventional Responses to Unique Catastrophes: Tailoring the Law to Meet the Challenges” on October 25 at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.

Feinberg has been key to resolving many of the nation’s most challenging and widely known disputes. He served as the special master of the federal September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001, in which he reached out to all who qualified to file a claim, evaluated applications, determined appropriate compensation, and disseminated awards. Feinberg also served as special master for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and as administrator of the BP Deepwater Horizon Disaster Victim Compensation Fund. He is currently serving as a mediator for the resolution of claims for the victims of the Colorado movie theatre shooting. He is the author of Who Gets What: Fair Compensation after Tragedy and Financial Upheaval.

The annual lecture is named after James K. L. Lawrence ’65, a partner with Frost Brown Todd in Cincinnati who has practiced labor-relations and employment law for more than 30 years. He is a skilled advocate in arbitration and an astute negotiator in collective bargaining and settlement discussions.

Lawrence had this to say about this year’s lecturer, Feinberg: “I got to know [Feinberg] when he came to give a candid update on the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund. I would like to see him in action.”

The presentation will be held in the William B. Saxbe Law Auditorium at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, 55 W. 12th Ave. on Thursday, October 25 at 4:00 p.m.
