Mix of Novices and Veterans Move on to Regional Negotiation Competitions

This year’s winners of the James K.L. Lawrence Negotiation Competition represent the best of the old guard and the new wave of Moritz negotiators. The team of 2L Elisabeth McClear and 3L Cole Dove were paired shortly before the competition began and received a crash course in negotiation theory at this fall’s Negotiation Workshop. Veteran 3L Kwame Christian, who was on last year’s winning team, and 3L Christopher Stroeer joined Elisabeth and Cole as the 2012 winners.

The final round of the competition consists of four finalist teams, who each face off against just one of the other teams. The two teams with the highest scores are declared the winners and advance to the American Bar Association’s Regional Negotiation Competition.

The two winning teams found themselves facing each other twice during the tournament, once in the early rounds and again in the finals. Judges were impressed with the improvement that McClear and Dove made with only a week of negotiating together and with the procedural command shown by Christian and Stroeer. Judge, and competition namesake, James K.L. Lawrence began his evaluation of the two teams with a hearty, “Wow!”

The other two teams that rose through a record-breaking number of 38 negotiation teams to make it to the final round of the competition were 2Ls Michael Dallaire and Jim Saywell, and 3L Luke Fedlam and 2L Benjamin Duval. Fedlam and Duval will represent Moritz at the Transactional LawMeet in Springfield, Massachusetts in February and will be coached by Dale Oesterle, the J. Gilbert Reese Chair in Contract Law.

The Moritz winners – McClear, Dove, Christian, and Stroeer – will advance to the ABA Regional Negotiation Competition in Lansing, Michigan on November 10-11. They will be coached by the Langdon Fellow in Dispute Resolution, Erin Archerd.

The Lawrence Negotiation Competition has become the largest intra-school competition at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. It is named after James K.L. Lawrence ’65, a partner at Frost Brown Todd in Cincinnati.
