Moritz College of Law Hosts Regional Mediation Competition

The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law hosted Region 7 of the ABA Representation in Mediation Competition March 9-11, 2012. Twelve teams from across the Midwest competed over two days for the honor of becoming Regional Champion and advancing to the National Competition in Washington, D.C.

Each team of two law students portrayed a client and an attorney in a mediated dispute. Alternative Dispute Resolution professionals from across the central Ohio area volunteered to serve as mediators, using a facilitative mediation style so that the students could practice their advocacy skills and problem-solving approaches. Students developed mediation plans, engaged in the mediation process, and self-evaluated their own performances. Teams were judged by volunteer attorneys and mediators from a variety of fields.

“This competition was the result of a lot of hard work by students and staff here at the college,” said Elizabeth Sherowski, Director of the Moot Court Lawyering Skills Program at Moritz. “It really paid off as we had a very smooth event that allowed students from all over the Midwest to practice skills they will use in their own careers.”

Participating schools included the University of Nebraska, Washington University, the University of Dayton, The Ohio State University, and the University of Missouri. The team of Brittany Doggett (’13) and Ryan Suskey (’13) and the team of Amanda Barrera (’13) and George Kiamos (’13) competed for Ohio State but did not advance to the final. The team from Washington University, comprised of Odey Meroueh and Jeremy Staley, was the regional champion.
