Joseph DiPasquale '12

While working as a liability examiner for a nationally-known insurance company, Joseph DiPasquale '12, sought out opportunities to lead and coach fellow co-workers by giving presentations and mentoring incoming associates. He felt that once his supervisors recognized his abilities and leadership aspirations, they were enthusiastic about allowing him to expand his role in the company.

At Moritz, Joseph got involved with the Program on Law and Leadership as a way to "develop my leadership skills in a way that can be applied to a larger community and have a deeper impact than my prior leadership role among co-workers."

For example, he attended a conversation series event with Professor Nancy Rogers, and was inspired by many of the decisions Professor Rogers made while she served as Ohio Attorney General. Joe specifically was impressed with Rogers' focus on "the importance of having effective and constructive communication with employees at all levels."

Joseph described how Professor Rogers was able to improve morale throughout the entire office because she listened to everyone with whom she came into contact, and made attempts to change things that were affecting job satisfaction. Joe also noted that Rogers recognized that the success of the organization as a whole was the most important goal, not just to satisfy those in positions of power.

Joe said that the luncheon "was an extremely valuable experience because it showed that a leader need not, and often should not, take a hard-line approach to decision making."
