Five New Staff Members at Moritz

Recent hires welcomed

January 7, 2005

Five people have recently joined the staff at the Moritz College of Law. They are...

Beverly Latham
Student Services Coordinator
Room 104
First day: October 25

Beverly comes to the Moritz College of Law from the Human Resources office at the OSU Medical Center. She provides office support for academic, student, and minority affairs and takes room reservations and maintains events on the Moritz calendar. She also assists with coordination of the judicial externship and Washington, D.C. programs. She took the position because she felt the environment would allow her to learn more about the field of law. “Law always intrigued me,” says Beverly. “I enjoyed the law classes I took in college.” (She holds a B.A. degree in business administration from Ohio Dominican University and a master’s certificate in human resources from Central Michigan University.)

Paul G. Wilkins
Staff Attorney, Student Housing Legal Clinic
345 Ohio Union
First day: November 8

Until the November election, Paul was director of voter protection for the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio. Previously, he was an attorney at the Equal Justice Foundation in Columbus under an Equal Justice Works fellowship. (His fellowship addressed predatory lending through aggressive class action litigation, legislative lobbying, community outreach, and education.) A double Ohio State grad, he jumped at the opportunity to return to campus to work. “I have always enjoyed working with students and this job gives me the opportunity to work with both law students and undergraduate students,” he says. In his new job, he provides legal representation to Ohio State student tenants with landlord/tenant concerns and supervises Moritz law students in those activities. He also develops and maintains relationships with campus-area landlords to prevent future problems.

Darnell Hines, Jr.
Coordinator of Stewardship and Special Events, Development Office
465 Drinko Hall
First day: December 13

Prior to joining the Moritz staff, Darnell was coordinator of enrollment services in the Ohio State’s office of Undergraduate Admissions and the First Year Experience. He had enjoyed the development work he had done in a previous position and saw the opportunity here to return to that work. In his new job, he makes sure that gifts to the Moritz College are put to their specific use and that the donors are properly thanked. An Ohio State political science grad, the Pittsburgh-area native plans to return to school in the near future to get a master’s degree.

Matt Steinke
Reference Librarian
280E Drinko Hall
First Day: December 27

Matt comes to the Moritz Law Library from Altick & Corwin in Dayton where he was an associate attorney. A law graduate from the University of Minnesota, he was interested in finding an academic position with the opportunity to have some teaching responsibilities. “The Moritz Law Library is an excellent law library and I feel very fortunate to be working here,” he says. As reference librarian, he provides research and reference assistance to faculty, students, and other patrons of the library. He’ll also teach Introduction to Legal Research.

Michelle Spillan
Administrative Assistant and Events Coordinator
174 Drinko Hall
First Day: December 1

Michelle previously was Extension associate and communications coordinator for the Department of Food Science and Technology in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (aka Ag College). In her new role, she provides administrative assistance to the student editors of Ohio State Law Journal and the Journal on Dispute Resolution, plus she helps coordinate journal events like the upcoming dispute resolution symposium. In the future, she’ll be helping Assistant Dean Pam Lombardi with events at the Barrister’s Club, which is currently under construction across 11th Avenue in the Gateway Project. The Columbus native and Ohio State grad likes her new job. “I get to interact with students; work with lively and creative people; and while I'm at it learn about legal issues and the law profession,” she says.
