Over 70 Students Compete in Herman Moot Court Competition

Justin Miller was selected as this year's Best Oral Advocate

The weekend of March 14 and 15 marked the end of the 2003 Herman Moot Court Competition, the annual intrascholastic moot court competition at the Moritz College of Law. Seventy-two second year students began the competititon by submitting appellate briefs on this year's topic, the pending Supreme Court case of Grutter v. Bollinger. All 72 applicants completed four preliminary rounds of oral argument judged by local practitioners and third-year Appellate Advocacy III students. Based on their oral argument scores in the preliminary rounds, sixteen competitors were selected to compete in the Semi-finals which were held Thursday, March 13, and were judged by Moritz College of Law professors.

The competition was narrowed to a final four students who then competed Saturday, March 15 for the Best Oral Advocate Honor. The final four students included Jaclyn Bryk, Jennifer Fuller, Camille Miller and Justin Miller. The Final Round was held at the United States Federal District Courthouse for the Southern District of Ohio. Judges included: the Honorable James L. Graham, Southern District of Ohio Judge; Douglas Cole, Solicitor General for the State of Ohio; Dean Nancy Hardin Rogers; and Assistant Dean Robert L. Solomon, II. After rigorous and impressive arguments by each competitor, Justin Miller was selected as this year's Best Oral Advocate.

A reception was held following the Final Round at the Columbus Capital Club. At the reception, the awards were presented for this year's Best Briefs: Todd Nist, Best Brief; Carmen Paniss, Second Best Brief; Deb Pickrel, Third Best Brief. Also, the awards for Best Overall Performance in the Competition (based on combined brief and oral argument scores) were presented: Jennifer Fuller, First Place Overall; Meredith Smith, Second Place Overall; Brian Nam, Third Place Overall.
