College Mourns Passing of Professor Morgan Shipman
December 4, 2008
Contact: Barbara Peck, (614) 292-0283

It is with great sadness that I write to let you know that Professor Morgan Shipman passed away last night. Morgan had been doing relatively well at the assisted living facility where he was recovering from a health incident earlier this year.
Morgan was a unique individual and a beloved presence at the College, unsurpassed in his impact on the thousands of lawyers whom he trained. The appreciation of his students through the years was reflected in myriad ways. For example, students across nearly three different decades selected Morgan as the Outstanding Professor, and Shipman-trained lawyers banded together to create a scholarship fund at the College in his honor.
Morgan's store of knowledge was truly encyclopedic. He was always happy to engage on any subject and in thirteen years as his colleague, I, for one, never found a topic that he did not seem to have detailed knowledge about. Students, faculty, and staff can all picture him holding forth, with a twinkle in his eye, and giving us insight into the subject at hand. At the same time, Morgan always put students and the College first. He also was a valuable asset to the law firm of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease in Columbus, where he served as part-time "of counsel" for 17 years. He was a true team player who was deeply valued for his extraordinary contributions through a long career.
We will miss him deeply.
Many of you have written me with your memories and stories about Morgan and to express your condolences. The Shipman family has set up a guest book, in which you can share such thoughts. Go to www.rutherfordfuneralhomes.com and click on Morgan Shipman on the lower left hand bar to do so.
Many of you have also inquired about sending flowers or donations. The family has asked me to convey that, in lieu of flowers, they would like donations to go to the Morgan Shipman Scholarship Fund. Donations to the fund can be sent to the Moritz College of Law, c/o Jeff Hilperts, 55 W. 12th Ave., Columbus, OH 43210.

I know you all share my sadness at this difficult news.
