Dean Nancy H. Rogers Named Ohio Attorney General; Professor Alan C. Michaels Selected as Interim Dean

Dear OSU Moritz College of Law alumni and friends,

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland has selected Nancy H. Rogers, dean of the Moritz College of Law, as interim Ohio Attorney General. She will serve Ohio in this new capacity through the November general election, when Ohio voters will determine a successor to complete the remainder of an unexpired term created by the resignation of former Attorney General Marc Dann.

Governor Strickland has made an inspired choice in tapping Nancy for this post. As dean of Ohio State's Moritz College of Law since 2001 and faculty member since 1976, she has served the University and the law school with great distinction. The people of Ohio are fortunate that the state's new top attorney has the highest degree of integrity, widely respected legal skills, and strong leadership qualities.

Alan C. Michaels

As a law professor, Nancy is a leading scholar in dispute resolution and is the Michael E. Moritz Chair in Alternative Dispute Resolution. She is the 2008 recipient of the Ohio State Bar Association's highest honor, the Bar Medal Award, and the 2007 president of the American Association of Law Schools. The law school has grown in stature under her direction, now offering a nationally ranked dispute resolution program, as well as an exceptionally broad array of clinical programs covering civil and criminal practice, mediation, legislation, and juvenile law. This fall, Moritz welcomed its first master of law class of international lawyers, providing students with expanded opportunities to interact with practitioners from other countries with differing legal systems.

Prior to being sworn in as interim attorney general, Nancy stepped down as dean and took a leave of absence from our faculty. Executive Vice President and Provost Joseph A. Alutto has named Alan C. Michaels, Edwin M. Cooperman Professor of Law at Moritz College, to serve as interim dean. Alan joined the faculty in 1995, has been selected as Outstanding Professor by two graduating classes and has been published in a variety of leading law journals. He served the law school as associate dean for faculty from 2001 to 2003. We are confident Alan will build upon the high standards of the Moritz College of Law.
