Moritz to Host Mediator Who Helped Bring Down South African Apartheid
(February 8, 2012) - The annual Lawrence Negotiation Lecture this year will feature Michael Young, who will be speaking on “The Secret Talks that Led to the Fall of Apartheid.” Mr. Young was a key player in the fall of apartheid in South Africa. The lecuture will be held on March 7 from 4 - 6 p.m. in the Saxbe Auditorium.
In 1986, Young set up secret meetings in Mells Park House, a private mansion in Somerset, UK, between the South African Government and the leadership of the African National Congress. There were over a dozen covert meetings over a five-year period, all of which were purposefully kept out of the media spotlight. The secret negotiations eventually led to the end the end of the apartheid system and to the release of Nelson Mandela.
Professor Alexander named to Power 100 list
(February 8, 2012) - Associate Professor of Law Michelle Alexander has been selected for On Being A Black Lawyer’s Power 100 list, which highlights the nation’s most influential black attorneys working in government, academics, and public and private sectors.
Students Win Prestigious ADR Writing Awards
(January 17, 2012) - Two Class of 2011 graduates recently were recognized by the CPR Institute for academic papers they wrote and published as students at Moritz. The CPR Institute is a nonprofit think-tank established as the Center for Public Resources in 1979. It serves as a global resource for corporations and legal counsel seeking best practices in conflict management and resolution of complex business-related disputes.
Each year, CPR recognizes innovative processes, techniques, systems, commitment, and scholarship in the resolution, prevention, and management of major disputes. The papers written by the Moritz students were the two papers selected for the CPR Academic Award Winners in the Student Articles/Papers category for 2011.

Davies to lead Kirwan Institute
(December 14, 2011) - Professor Sharon L. Davies has been selected as the next director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at The Ohio State University, replacing founding executive director john powell, who leaves the institute’s top leadership position at the end of December.
Through interdisciplinary research and other working partnerships, the Kirwan Institute seeks to deepen the understanding of the causes and consequences of racial and ethnic disparities in order to stimulate change to bring about a society that is fair and just for all people. The institute was established in May 2003 and named for former university president William E. “Brit” Kirwan in recognition of his efforts to champion diversity.
