Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution

About the JDR

Now in its twenty-fifth year of publication, the Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution ("JDR") is a student-initiated, student-run publication of The Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law. The JDR is dedicated to the exploration of alternative forums for and methods of dispute resolution, such as negotiation, mediation, arbitration, summary jury trials, and mini-trials.

The JDR is the official law journal of the American Bar Association's Section on Dispute Resolution and is a major component of the college's nationally recognized program on Alternative Dispute Resolution ("ADR").

The JDR publishes four issues annually, consisting of three articles issues and a symposium issue. Each of the three articles issues contains articles by scholars and practitioners, notes and comments by student staff members, recent development notes by third-year student staff members, and book reviews by leaders in the field of ADR. The annotated bibliography issue contains abstracts of over 500 articles, books, and other resources on ADR published during the calendar year.

In addition to its editing and publishing activities, the JDR sponsors symposia to facilitate discussion on cutting-edge issues within the field of alternative dispute resolution. Recent symposia include discussion on the Model Mediation Project, the structure of court-connected mediation programs, the role of ADR in settling on-line disputes, the intersection of legal ethics and ADR, and ADR in end-of-life decisions..

The JDR also sponsors the annual Schwartz Lecture, which brings a nationally recognized scholar in the field of alternative dispute resolution to the College of Law to address issues of interest and concern to both students and practitioners.

The JDR has a circulation of over 800 subscribers.  Out of over 100 submissions the JDR receives each year, approximately six to eight are chosen for publication.

As a result of the hard work of its student-editors, the JDR has won several prestigious awards. Recent awards include:

  • CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution's Outstanding Student Note Award

Students are invited to join the JDR in two ways. The JDR invites students receiving the top two grades in each of the college's first-year legal writing sections to become staff members. In addition the JDR invites students drafting the best papers for the annual summer writing competition, held jointly with the Ohio State Law Journal and open to all students.

Members of the JDR gain invaluable research and writing experience through participation in the editing process and authorship of a student note, several of which are selected for publication each year in the JDR.
