As associate general counsel for The Ohio State University’s Office of Legal Affairs, Kimberly Shumate manages the University's litigation matters, coordinating the oversight of cases being handled by the Ohio Attorney General's office and by Special Counsel. She advises the University regarding labor and employment matters, and counsels senior University officials regarding labor law, personnel practices and policies. She also plays a key role in the negotiation of the University's contracts with organized labor.
Prior to joining Ohio State, Shumate was with the law firm of Porter, Wright, Morris and Arthur, L.L.P. where she represented large- and medium-sized businesses in labor and employment matters. She litigated before Ohio courts, including the Tenth District Court of Appeals and federal courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Shumate makes presentations on labor and employment law topics to university audiences as well as to outside groups and organizations, including the Ohio State Bar Association, the Columbus Bar Association, Lorman Associates, and the Council on Education in Management.
