Professor Murchison visits from the Louisiana State University Law Center, where he was the James E. and Betty M. Phillips Professor until his recent retirement. He served as a faculty advisor to the Environmental Law Society and the Environmental Law Moot Court team and taught courses and seminars in constitutional law, environmental law, and local government law.

Prior to joining the faculty at LSU, Murchison clerked for U.S. Court of Appeals Judge John D. Butzner Jr. and served four years as a judge advocate in the United States Air Force. At Harvard Law School, he was a Langdell Fellow in 1980-81, and he was a Natural Law Institute Fellow at the Northwestern School of Law in 1992-93.

Murchison has been a visiting professor at the University of Richmond, a distinguished civilian professor visitor at the United States Military Academy, and Frank Spain Visiting Chairholder at the University of Alabama School of Law. In 1997, he was awarded the Medal for Outstanding Civilian Service to the United States Army.

In addition to more than 40 articles that have appeared in legal journals, Murchison has authored two books, Federal Criminal Law Doctrines: The Forgotten Impact of National Prohibition and The Snail Darter Case: TVA Versus the Endangered Species Act.

Currently, Murchison serves on the executive committee of the Association of American Law Schools' section on local government law.
