Alabama Felony Voting Suit Dismissed
Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Tracy McCooey has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the ACLU to clarify which felons are permitted to vote in elections under Alabama state law. Judge McCooey determined that the plaintiffs lacked standing to bring the suit (Read the court's order). An appeal is expected, although it is unlikely that the case will be resolved prior to the the general election in November. See the EL@M case page for more information and additiona case documents.

Groups Ask Kaine To Restore Felon Rights
Civil rights organizations are asking Gov. Timothy M. Kaine to sign an executive order restoring the rights of nearly 300,000 felons before he leaves office in January.

Maryland Delegate plans revision to state law allowing felons to vote
Maryland – thanks to the legislature’s 2007 repeal of all the provisions of the state’s lifetime voting ban (which also eliminated the three-year waiting period after completion of sentence for certain categories of offenses) – is among 20 states where all people with felony convictions can vote upon completion of sentence.

Volunteers seek support for voting rights restoration
Volunteers from several organizations canvassed the California, Shelby Park, Phoenix Hill and Smoketown neighborhoods to spread the word about voting rights and invite people to an afternoon rally. They collected petitions in favor of state legislation that would restore voting rights to convicted felons after they serve their time.

House Republican Leader Adam Hasner on Friday attacked a program that restores voting rights to most ex-felons in Florida, but ignored the fact that Republican Gov. Charlie Crist proposed it.
