Confusion in MD re: Provisionals as DRE Alternative

Maryland officials have unfortunately instructed some poll workers to distribute provisional ballots to requesting voters as a DRE alternative. Now, just before the state's February 12 Presidential primary, the State Board of Elections says provisionals are not to be used this way, and has instructed locals to reject any such ballots. ACORN Sues Over Bus Stop Registration

ACORN and other voter registration groups have sued the Maryland Transit Authority for preventing them from attempting to register voters waiting at bus and train stops. The complaint and motion for preliminary injunction may be found here. [Read More]

Court Rejects Request to Extend Absentee Voting

The Baltimore Sun reports a state judge has denied an ACLU suit seeking to extend the absentee voting period in Maryland. Apparently some Maryland voters who requested ballots have not received them, yet to be counted these ballots must be cast and postmarked by tonight. [Read More]

E-voting system lets voters verify their ballots are counted

A new electronic voting system being used today for the first time in a government election in the U.S. will allow voters and elections auditors in Takoma Park, Md. to go online and verify whether votes have been correctly recorded.

The first government election to use a new cryptographic scheme that lets both voters and auditors check that votes were cast and recorded accurately will be held tomorrow in Takoma Park, MD.

Maryland Delegate plans revision to state law allowing felons to vote

Maryland – thanks to the legislature’s 2007 repeal of all the provisions of the state’s lifetime voting ban (which also eliminated the three-year waiting period after completion of sentence for certain categories of offenses) – is among 20 states where all people with felony convictions can vote upon completion of sentence.

Maryland legislature approves early voting bill

Legislation to create early voting in Maryland cleared the general assembly late Monday night, and Gov. Martin O'Malley has indicated he will sign the bill.

Candidate Says Voter Lists Are Flawed

Stephanie Burke, a community activist, is running for the District 4 City council seat in Pocomoke City. However, she says there is a problem. Burke says the list of registered voters that she received from the city does not coincide with Worcester County Board of Elections' list.
