GPO Releases Authenticated Official Documents Online

Beginning in March 2008, the Government Printing Office (GPO) is providing authenticated electronic documents at its web site.  The first documents available in authenticated form are public and private laws from the 110th Congress and the Fiscal Year 2009 Budget.

GPO uses digital signature technology to certify that electronic documents are official and authentic.  “Official” means the documents are published by the federal government, at government expense, or as required by law.  “Authentic” means the content is complete and unaltered from the original approved or published document provided to GPO by Congress, federal agencies, or other federal organizations.

Authenticated documents appear with an emblem and other integrity marks.  When you are connected to the internet and open an authenticated document in Adobe Acrobat or Reader 7.0 or 8.0, you can view the authentication certificate.  The certificate includes the digital signature of the Superintendent of Documents and information about if and when the document has been modified.

D&B Million Dollar Database

Dun & Bradstreet’s (“D&B”) Million Dollar Database provides access to over 14 million records for U.S. and Canadian businesses, both private and public. The site allows for searching by business name, SIC code, city, state or telephone number; an advanced search option allows you to further narrow your search criteria to obtain more accurate results.

Once a search is performed, you can sort your results by various fields (such as sales, location or SIC code), and selecting a company will provide you with information such as contact information, size, year established, executive biographies, and the company's line of business.

The D&B Million Dollar Database can be accessed either on-campus or off-campus (with proper authentication).

Improve the Bluebook

The editors of The Bluebook citation manual are soliciting input as to how the resources can be improved in the next edition (the 19th). On online survey is available here. Please note, surveys must be received by June 30, 2008, in order to be considered for the new edition. Comments and suggestions can also be sent directly to the editors (suggestions@legalbluebook.com).
