Dear Mr./Ms.:
Introduction: An employer wants to know who you are (class year, school) and what you want (position name, starting when), how you found out about the position (posting, referral, individual research) and why you are interested in the position and/or organization.
Making the Case: An employer wants to know how your background is uniquely suited to the position. Demonstrate how your academic background, prior work experience, personal strengths and interests relate to the position. Include information not on the resume relevant to the hiring decision.
Follow Through: Indicate that you want the job and that you will be following up by phone to investigate the possibility of an interview. Candidates willing to take this step are perceived to be more interested than other candidates. Your assertiveness is not only an indication of interest; it demonstrates initiative.
Sincerely,
Your Name

Cover Letter Tip: The more you tailor your letter to the specific employer, the greater likelihood of an interview. Students frequently develop a set of interchangeable paragraphs that can be used depending on the employer type or location.
