Gurwin Finds Niche in Entertainment Law
David Gurwin ’85 is the chair of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, PC’s entertainment and media law and technology and transactions groups, an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University, a guest lecturer at several colleges across the Midwest, the president of the Hampton Township School District in Allison Park, Penn., and a professional jazz pianist.
Gurwin extends his practice toward entertainment, media and sports, emerging technology, life sciences, and pharmaceuticals. His greatest passion however, lies in of entertainment law.

New Clinical Professor Represents Refugee Communities
From Muslim to Arab and South Asian groups, to New York and that “state up north,” Amna Akbar has put her lawyering skills to use in many communities. And this fall she’ll be bringing them to students at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law as a visiting clinical professor of law. After providing legal services to immigrant battered women and then representing men held by the United States in the extraordinary rendition and secret detention program, Akbar saw U.S. national security policies were encroaching on the rights of Muslim, Arab, and South Asian communities not just abroad, but at home as well. It was then that Akbar decided to combine her commitment in community legal services with her interest in critically examining national security policies. ››

Mascaro Negotiates Labor Deals for Happiest Place on Earth
While a score of her classmates are probably settled at law firms, Briana Seagriff Mascaro ’10 opted to work somewhere that has more flying carpets and mice than an ordinary office.
Mascaro,a labor relations manager for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts U.S. located in Lake Bueno Vista, Fla., joked of “The Most Magical Place on Earth,” “I drank the kool-aid long ago” because she worked for the company even before law school.
As an undergrad at Cornell University, Mascaro landed a six-month internship with Disney’s employee relations department, which introduced her to in-house equal employment opportunity investigations. “This is what led me to law school and is directly related to how I landed my current job,” she said.

OutLaws Honored with University Award
The student-led group OutLaws was named a recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Diversity Enhancement Award, a University-wide award that recognizes units or individuals that have demonstrated a significant commitment to enhancing diversity at The Ohio State University.
The organization, comprised of students, faculty, and staff of College of Law, promotes understanding of legal issues that affect the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered communities.

Simmons, Smith Elected Outstanding Faculty/Staff by Class of 2012
Professor Ric Simmons was elected the Morgan E. Shipman Outstanding Professor by the graduating class of 2012. Monte Smith, assistant dean for academic affairs, was elected Outstanding Staff Member for the fourth year in a row.

Tokaji Testifies Before Senate Judiciary on New Voting Law
Professor Daniel P. Tokaji, the Robert M. Duncan/Jones Day Designated Professor and Senior Fellow at the nonpartisan Election Law @ Moritz project, is testifying on May 7 before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights. Tokaji's testimony focused on new state voting laws.
