Democracy series continues with examination of Supreme Court

The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and the Mershon Center for International Security Studies are collaborating on a speakers’ series aiming to stimulate discussion about democracy.

Organizers hope the Democracy Studies Speakers Series might lead to the development of an interdisciplinary program in democracy studies at Ohio State. During the first year of the two-year series, national scholars from different vantage points will discuss the philosophical foundations for democracy and conceptions of democracy.

Guy-Uriel Charles, professor of law at Duke University School of Law and director of the Duke Center on Law, Race, and Politics, continues the discussion on March 29 by providing insight into the legal foundations of democracy. His talk, “Democracy’s Guardian? Understanding the Supreme Court’s Law and Politics Jurisprudence,” is the second in the University’s series addressing the fundamental themes concerning the operation of democracy in a society.

Upcoming scholars will discuss the legal foundations of democracy; the Electoral College; American democracy – its institutions, its processes – in contemporary times; the role of political parties and partisanship/institutional mechanisms; and the state of democracy studies.
