Moritz, Mershon Center partner for speakers’ series

The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and the Mershon Center for International Security Studies are collaborating on a speakers’ series aiming to stimulate discussion about democracy.

Organizers hope the Democracy Studies Speakers Series might lead to the development of an interdisciplinary program in democracy studies at The Ohio State University. During the first year of the two-year series, national scholars from different vantage points will discuss the philosophical foundations for democracy and conceptions of democracy.

James Kloppenberg, the Charles Warren Professor of American History at Harvard University, will kick off the series with his lecture “The American Democratic Tradition: From Roger Williams to Barack Obama” on Feb. 24. Upcoming scholars will discuss the legal foundations of democracy; the Electoral College; American democracy – its institutions, its processes – in contemporary times; the role of political parties and partisanship/institutional mechanisms; and the state of democracy studies.
