Steven Pecinovsky '80, a graduate of the Office of Personnel Management's Federal Executive Institute, was selected for the Harvard Kennedy School of Government's Senior Executive Fellow program. Pecinovsky is the chief of staff for the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in Tampa, Fla. Douglas G. Haynam '80, a partner at the Toledo, Ohio firm of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP, has been named a leader in the field of natural resources and the environment by the 2012 Chambers USA Guide to America's Leading Business Lawyers. In addition to having extensive experience in that area of law, Haynam has served as chairman of the Ohio State Bar Association's Environmental Law Committee and is a member of the National Resources Law and Litigation sections of the American Bar Association. Carl Smallwood ’80, a partner at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, was named an Ohio Super Lawyer for 2012 by Super Lawyers for his eighth consecutive year. Smallwood, who is with the firm’s Columbus office, specializes in civil litigation defense. (January, 2012)

Roger K. Quillen '80, managing partner and chairman of the management committee in the Atlanta office of Fisher & Phillips LLP, has been selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2012. Quillen’s practice involves litigation covering a wide range of employment discrimination issues, employee welfare benefit plans, the Railway Labor Act, and issues arising before the National Labor Relations Board and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. His special emphasis is in federal appellate litigation. For the past three years, Quillen has been named to the 100 Most Powerful Employment Attorneys in the United States by Human Resource Executive magazine. (September, 2011)

Richard Jacobs '80 was appointed general counsel of Pictometry International Corp., a leading provider of geo-referenced, aerial image libraries and related software. Jacobs oversees rights management and licensing of Pictometry's global image library and joins the Rochester, N.Y. company's executive management team. (September, 2011)

Richard Davies ’80 was named a 2011 Ohio Super Lawyer in workers’ compensation law. Davies is in private practice representing employers in workers’ compensation cases. In April 2012, Davies will compete in the 27th annual Marathon des Sables. The race, billed as “The Toughest Footrace on Earth,” is a seven-day, 155-mile, self-sufficiency race that takes place in the Sahara Desert in Morocco. Davies is running the race on behalf of The Up Side of Downs, an Akron nonprofit organization which provides support to individuals with Down syndrome and their families. (September, 2011)

Gerry W. Beyer '80 recently received the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award from Texas Tech University. The Chancellor's Award is the highest teaching award given by the Texas Tech University System to faculty members and is the sixteenth teaching award won by Prof. Beyer since 2000. Prof. Beyer was elected to the American Law Institute and co-authored a book entitled Fat Cats and Lucky Dogs -- How to Leave (Some of) Your Estate to Your Pets. Prof. Beyer is also excited about returning to Moritz in January 2012 to teach Wills & Trusts and Property as a Visiting Professor. (May, 2011)

The Honorable Theodore R. Essex '80 and James Holbein have written a chapter for a forth coming ABA Monograph on ADR. The chapter covers ADR and the International Trade Commission. Judge Essex has also been appointed as an Adjunct Professor for the fall quarter teaching Enforcement of IP Rights in the U.S. International Trade Commission. (April, 2011)

Luis M. Alcalde ’80 recently joined the firm Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter as of counsel. Alcalde brings to the firm more than 30 years of expertise in business, litigation, and international law. Alcalde previously served several years in supervisory and litigation roles for the Ohio Attorney General's Office as well as 20 years with Crabbe Brown & James LLP, where he was a partner. Joseph Pappalardo ’80 was re-elected to the Board of Directors of the Trucking Industry Defense Association (TIDA). A member of TIDA’s Board of Directors since 2004, Pappalardo also serves as general counsel and attends to contractual, insurance, liability, and other legal issues which may be encountered by TIDA. Founded in 1993, TIDA has become the organization of choice for more than 1,700 motor carriers, trucking insurers, defense attorneys, and claims servicing companies. Pappalardo is a partner of Gallagher Sharp in Cleveland. (January, 2011)

Carl D. Smallwood ’80, a partner at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, was honored for his leadership in promoting diversity in the legal profession at the Columbus Bar Association’s Martin Luther King, Jr. reception on Jan. 21. Smallwood was elected the CBA’s first African-American president in 2000, at which time he led 22 firms to sign the Managing Partners’ Diversity Initiative (MPDI), a five-year action plan intended to address the lack of diversity in local law firms, focusing efforts on the recruitment, assimilation and retention of minority attorneys at participating firms in Columbus. Melanie Cavendish Braithwaite ’80 recently attended the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, as a delegate of the Sierra Club (US), the oldest environmental advocacy group in the country. She serves on the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter Executive Committee and is chair of the Ohio Chapter's Political Committee. She has been politically active in Ohio for more than 40 years. She is in private practice in Columbus, where she has three sons and five grandsons. (January, 2010)

Christopher Swift ’80 was named by Best Lawyers as the “Cleveland Tax Lawyer of the Year.” Swift is a partner in the Cleveland office of Baker Hostetler. He is a member of the firm’s Policy Committee and serves as the Tax Group coordinator. Swift focuses his practice on healthcare, tax-exempt organizations, and state and local tax matters. Carl Smallwood ’80 was elected president of the 11-member governing board established to guide the high school Law & Leadership Institute. The institute was formed last year as a pilot project in Ohio to improve diversity in the legal profession. Smallwood is a partner in the Columbus office of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease. Glenn S. Krassen ’80 was named in the 2010 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the areas of energy law, natural resources law, and oil & gas law. Krassen is currently a partner in the Cleveland office of Bricker & Eckler LLP. (November, 2009)

Richard Davies ’80 was named a 2009 Ohio Super Lawyer in workers’ compensation law. In February 2009, Davies established his own law firm in Akron dedicated to the representation of employers in workers’ compensation cases. (November, 2009)

David K. Conrad ’80 was named in the 2010 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the area of real estate law. Conrad is a partner in the Columbus office of Bricker & Eckler LLP. (November, 2009)

Norman Nadorff ’80 recently received the Annual Eduacation Award from the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators. The award goes to the member who has done the most to promote education among international petroleum negotiators and lawyers. Nadorff has been senior counsel for British Petroleum in Luanda, Angola since 2006. The award was in recognition of the Norman's efforts in the creation and implementation of a BP-sponsored oil and gas LL.M. program at the Agostinho Neto University College of Law, the first of its kind in Africa. Norman also serves as industry advisor and law instructor in the program which is currently in its second year. (October, 2009)

Philip J. Halley '81, a shareholder with the Milwaukee office of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C., was recognized by Best Lawyers as Lawyer of the Year 2013 in Milwaukee for Litigation - Trusts and Estates. (May, 2013)

Rachel Geiersbach '81, was promoted to vice president, legal at Advance Auto Parts. Geiersbach will be responsible for all corporate governance and securities law for the company and will take on the responsibility for employment law and other claims oversight. (April, 2013)

David Borer ’81 was recently appointed as the new general counsel for The American Federation of Government Employees, the country's largest federal employee union. As general counsel, Borer will head the union's legal programs, providing strategic and policy advice to the elected leaders of the union. (October, 2010)

Carolyn Bell Phillips ’81 was quoted in a story published in Modern Healthcare magazine in December regarding possible changes to hospitals’ responsibilities under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act. Phillips is a deputy city attorney for the city of Los Angeles. (January, 2010)

Barbara F. Yaksic ’81 was named in the 2010 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the area of commercial litigation. Yaksic is a member of McGlinchey Stafford’s Cleveland office, where she focuses her practice in civil litigation. (November, 2009)

Richard Mancino '82, a partner with Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP in New York City, contributed to his firm's selection by Law360 as "Pro Bono Firm of 2012." Law360 singled out two of Mancino's pro bono cases for special recognition. In Favors v. Cuomo, a three-judge federal court panel granted judgment for Willkie's clients, agreeing to redraw New York's congressional districts by following neutral redistricting principles that did not favor incumbents. In the other, Mancino led a pro bono team's submission of an amicus brief on behalf of the National Center for Science Education in Ohio's Knox County Fifth Appellate District Court of Appeals. The case, Freshwater v. Mount Vernon School District Board of Education, raised issues concerning the inappropriate teaching of Creationism by a public high school science teacher. The case is now before the Ohio Supreme Court. (September, 2012)

Lynette Chappell-Williams '82, Cornell's Associate Vice President for Inclusion and Workforce Diversity, received the 2011 Chris C. Kjeldsen Work Life Legacy Award from the Families and Work Institute. (June, 2012)

James P. Botti ’82, a partner at Porter Wright, was recognized by Chambers USA 2012 as a leading lawyer in his field of bankruptcy/restructuring. Botti works in the firm’s Columbus office. (May, 2012)

Donald Leach Jr. '82 is handing over the reins as managing partner of Dinsmore's Columbus office to fellow alumnus Charles E. Ticknor III '89. Leach had served as the managing partner since 2008 and will continue his active involvement in the community, including returning to a position on Upper Arlington City Council.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the growth and energy of our Columbus office, and thank my colleagues for the opportunity to serve," he said. "I know that Chuck will build on our solid foundation and lead us to the next level.”

Ticknor, who has practiced law for nearly 23 years, is a partner in the firm’s litigation department., providing counsel to a broad range of clients, including Fortune 500 companies, midsize businesses, family-owned operations, nonprofit organizationss, and individuals. (January, 2012)

Deborah Levine Herman '82 is the co-founder of www.waenetwork.com, the fastest-growing, content-specific social network for writers, agents, and editors. Herman works as a literary agent and is the author of 10 nonfiction books. She currently resides in Stockbridge, Mass. (January, 2012)

Pamela Barker '82 was appointed by Ohio Gov. John Kasich to the bench of the Common Pleas Court of Cuyahoga County. She took office on Sept. 19, replacing former Judge Steven Terry. To serve the remainder of Terry's term, Judge Barker must run in the November 2012 election. (September, 2011)

Steve Magas '82, Ohio's "Bike Lawyer," will be celebrating the second anniversary of his new firm, The Magas Firm, in June 2010. While his practice focuses on litigation, personal injury and insurance issues, his niche in the world of Bicycling is well recognized. Steve is the co-author of a popular book, "Bicycling and the Law," sits on the Board of the Ohio Bicycle Federation and has handled close to 300 "bike cases" over the past 25+ years. He is active in bike advocacy at the local, state and national level. Steve recently moved his office to eastern Cincinnati, but his practice takes him all over Ohio. Steve has also been called into bike cases in Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Florida! Steve is also very happy to announce the birth of his first grandchild, William I. Johns, to his step-son Billy & his wife Teresa. (June, 2011)

Donald W. Gregory ’82 was named in the 2011 edition of Ohio Super Lawyers. Gregory is a director at Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter and is currently the chair of the firm’s construction, litigation, and mediation services practice areas. (January, 2011)

Michael Allison '82 was promoted to executive vice president, human resources at Office Depot. Allison joined Office Depot in 2006 as vice president after serving as executive vice president of human resources for Victoria's Secret Direct. (January, 2011)

James P. Botti ’82 has been recognized by Chambers USA 2010 as one of the leading lawyers in Ohio in the area of bankruptcy/restructuring. He was also named a top banking lawyer in Columbus in the 2011 edition of Best Lawyers. Botti has spent nearly all of his 28-year career representing banks and other financial institutions in negotiating and documenting complex commercial loan transactions and in handling troubled loan or “workout” situations both inside and outside of bankruptcy. Botti is a partner in the Columbus office of Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP. (November, 2010)

Douglas Morgan ’82 in June received the Columbus Bar Association’s Community Service Award. The award was presented in recognition of his contribution of time and effort in service to the Central Ohio community and to the legal profession. Douglas Morgan ’82 has joined the Columbus office of Hahn Loeser & Parks LLP as a partner. Morgan has more than 20 years of experience in general corporate law, corporate finance, securities, and mergers and acquisitions, in addition to his experience in the areas of banking, real estate, and venture capital. Donald W. Gregory ’82 was named in the 2010 edition of Ohio Super Lawyers in construction/surety. Gregory was also honored as a “top lawyer,” designating him as one of the top 50 attorneys in Columbus. Gregory is a director in the Columbus office of Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter. (January, 2010)

Steve Magas ’82, after more than 27 years of working for or with others, decided to open his own practice. The Magas Firm opened on June 14, 2009 in Loveland, Ohio. Magas continues to focus much of his practice on bicycles and motorcycles. He has handled more than 200 “bike cases” while continuing to write about bike laws for a variety of publications. Mitchell A. Weisman '83, a trial attorney with the Cleveland firm Weisman, Kennedy & Berris Co., LPA, has been named an Ohio Super Lawyer by Super Lawyers magazine. Weisman, an elected member of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers since 2008, has won many large cases, including some seven-figure verdicts for his clients. (May, 2013)

Jeff Leonard '83 has rejoined the business services group at Roetzel & Andress as partner. He worked at the firm from 2001 through 2009 before starting his own firm, the Leonard Legal Group Co. LPA. Leonard will work out of Roetzel & Andress' Akron and Cleveland offices. (June, 2012)

Kathleen (Birt) Hale ’83 was sworn in as the newest council member in the village of Bentleyville, Ohio on Oct. 3, 2011. She worked for several years as an attorney in the law department of National City Corp. and was involved on the village’s Planning and Zoning Commission prior to joining council. (October, 2011)

William A. Leuby ’83, senior vice president of Columbus-based investment management and financial advisory firm Hamilton Capital Management, Inc., has been named one of the “Best Financial Advisers For Doctors” for the third time by the editors of Medical Economics magazine. Leuby has been a member of the Hamilton Capital leadership team since its inception in 1997. (March, 2011)

Martha J. Sweterlitsch ’83 was presented the 2010 Outstanding Lawyer Award by the American Bar Association's Non-profit Organizations Committee. The "Outstanding Lawyer Award" is presented annually for distinguished service by an attorney practicing non-profit law. Sweterlitsch is currently of counsel at Benesch Friedlander Coplan & Aronoff in Columbus, where her practice is focused on non-profit, administrative, health, state tax, and federal and state tax exemption law and lobbying. She is currently chair of the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations, and also serves as a trustee for the Ohio United Way and as legislative counsel for the Ohio Alliance of YMCA’s, the Ohio Association of Child Care Providers, and the Association of Ohio Philanthropic Homes and Housing For Aging. Jeffrey Huff '83 was elected mayor of Castle Pines, Colo., in November. Castle Pines is located just 20 miles south of Denver in Douglas County and is home to about 10,000 people. He is a vice president at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney where he has provided wealth advisory and estate planning services to clients since 1988. (February, 2010)

Dan Weiss '85 has been tapped as interim executive director for the Jazz Arts Group of Columbus, effective January 2012, as the organization conducts a national search for a permanent leader. Until his JAG appointment, Weiss was executive director and chief investment officer of the Ohio Highway Patrol Retirement System, where he was responsible for the overall management of the $700 million public pension plan. Justice Yvette McGee Brown ’85 and Judge Carla D. Moore ’77 made history in March on the Supreme Court of Ohio when they were the first black justices to simultaneously hear an Ohio Supreme Court case. Moore, who serves in the Ninth District Court of Appeals, sat in place of Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton, who had recused herself from the case. In its 208-year history, the Ohio Supreme Court has had only three black justices appointed and all were Ohio State Law graduates. (March, 2011)

Jim Richey, Ph.D., '88 is the sixth president of Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Fla. The college's board of trustees voted him in as the new president in January 2012. Alan Landman, the board’s chair, said Richey has played a key role in the college’s success, and praised his performance and strong ties to the local community as among the reasons why he earned the job.

Richey was appointed to board of trustees by Gov. Charlie Crist in July 2007. He left the board to accept the position of internal counsel for the college in 2008. Later that same year, he was named vice president of business affairs and general counsel. In July 2010, he assumed the post of executive vice president and general counsel, responsible for managing all college departments, including academics, business and financial affairs, fundraising, operations, human resources, information technologies and intercollegiate athletics.

Richey previously owned his own law practice in Melbourne, Fla., from 1994 to 2008. His work included advising businesses on contract negotiations, employment policies, employee benefits, corporate governance and charitable giving programs. He successfully argued a case before the Florida Supreme Court. (January, 2012)

Jeffrey J. Helmick '88 was nominated by President Obama to be a judge on the U.S. District Court Northern District of Ohio. William R. Damschroder ’88 was appointed as the chief legal advisor for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Damschroder will provide legal support and guidance to the department’s divisions and offices. Damschroder spent the majority of his career in public service including 12 years with the Ohio Department of Commerce where he worked in all areas of administrative and real estate law. Todd McKenney ’89, a former state representative, has been appointed by the governor as the new judge in Summit County Probate Court by Ohio Gov. John Kasich. McKenney, 48, who was in his first term in the Ohio House, said he was grateful for the appointment to the probate court.

“It’s a court I’m familiar with from my law practice. I think I’ve practiced in just about every area of the court, from estates to guardianships to adoptions to marriage licenses,” he told the Akron Beacon Journal. (November, 2011)
