Charles Warner '70 was honored among the top Super Lawyers in 2013. Warner practices in the area of employment and labor law for Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP. (January, 2013)

Charles Warner '70 has been selected for inclusion in the 2011 edition of The International Who's Who in the area of Management Labour and Employment. Warner represents employers in connection with discrimination charges, express and implied employment contract issues, employment practices and related tort and benefit claims. His litigation experience includes the defense of both opt-out and opt-in class actions. Warner is a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, member of the American and Ohio State Bar Associations' Labor and Employment Law Sections and founding chair of the Columbus Bar Association's Labor and Employment Law Committee. Jack Palumbo ’70 was elected partner in the Cleveland office of Tucker Ellis & West. Palumbo’s practices primarily focuses on business, insurance, directors’ and officers’ liability, mass tort litigation, and products liability. (January, 2011)

Charles C. Warner ’70 was awarded the 2010 Columbus Bar Service Medal in recognition of his long history of distinguished service to the Columbus Bar Association. Warner, a partner with Porter Wright, has been committed to the Columbus Bar for 40 years, and has served as president of both the Bar and the Bar Foundation. The Bar Service Medal is the highest honor bestowed by the organization. (June, 2010)

Clifford E. Haines ’70, president of the Philadelphia law firm of Haines & Associates, will became immediate past president of the Pennsylvania Bar Association at the conclusion of the organization’s Annual Meeting May 14 in Hershey. (May, 2010)

1971

John W. Hilbert, II '71, has been included in the 2013 edition of the Best Lawyers in America. Hilbert is an attorney at the firm of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP. (April, 2013)

Richard Lynn Mann '71 has started a lecture series on the unintended dangers of the cyber world after more than 37 years as outside state counsel for the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators. In a little more than two years, his series has been given to more than 35,000 middle and high school students, more than 4,000 teachers and administrators, and 1,000 parents. Mann is a sole practitioner in Westerville, Ohio. (March, 2013)

John W. Hilbert II ’71 was named a 2012 Best Lawyers Lawyer of the Year in the category of corporate law in Toledo, Ohio. Hilbert is a partner in the corporate and real estate practice groups in the Toledo office of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP. He has extensive experience representing large, medium-sized and small companies and acts as special counsel for a number of Toledo-area banks in their commercial business and real estate loan transactions. James M. Schottenstein ’71 was proud to welcome his daughter, Irene A. Schottenstein ’10, as an alumna of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law at the 2010 Hooding Ceremony in May. “It is hard to fathom that 38 years have passed since I received my own hood,” James Schottenstein said, “and as I sat in the audience I had a strong sense of déjà vu.” (June, 2010)

Mary Ellen Fairfield '72, a partner with the Columbus office of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, was included in the 2013 Best Lawyers in America List, which entails an exhaustive peer-review survey. Fairfield's practice focuses on all kinds of litigation: bet-the-company, commercial, labor and employment, personal injury and product liability. (October, 2012)

Stephen Lloyd Smith '72 was elected to serve a three-year term as the District 16 representative on the Board of Governors of the Ohio State Bar Association. District 16 includes 252 attorneys practicing in a four-county area. Smith is a general practice attorney in New Bremen, Ohio. (July, 2012)

Robert Messham '72 has left the bench in Miamisburg Municipal Court, after deciding not to seek re-election to the municipal judgeship. Messham still plans to work as a visiting judge, starting Feb. 1-3, 2012, in place of friend and colleague, Kettering Municipal Court Judge Robert Moore. (January, 2012)

Mary Ellen Fairfield ‘72, a partner at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP’s Columbus office, was named an Ohio Super Lawyer for 2012 by Super Lawyers for her eighth consecutive year. Bruce E. Cryder ’72 was named the Lexington, Ky., National Resources Lawyer of the Year for 2011 by Best Lawyers. Cryder is a member in the Lexington office of Greenebaum Doll & McDonald PLLC, and is a member of the firm’s Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Practice Group. His practice focuses on mineral, energy and natural resources law, with a particular emphasis on the coal industry. (November, 2010)

David A. Gradwohl ’72 recently co-authored a law review article titled “Equity Receiverships for Ponzi Schemes,” which was published in the Seton Hall Legislative Journal. The article explains the complicated steps that victims of Ponzi schemes must take in order to maximize recovery of their investments. Gradwohl is a partner in the Blue Bell, Penn., office of Fox Rothschild. (August, 2010)

William M. Owens ’72 was elected to serve a three-year term as District 9 representative on the Board of Governors of the Ohio State Bar Association. Owens is a partner in the Coshocton, Ohio, law firm of Owens & Manning. He practices mainly domestic, criminal, real estate, and probate law matters. John P. Beavers ’72, a partner in the Columbus office of Bricker & Eckler LLP, was named “Columbus Corporate Lawyer of the Year” in the 2010 edition of Best Lawyers. Beavers has been a practicing lawyer since 1972, including over 11 years as managing partner with Bricker & Eckler. Understanding the critical role governance plays in all organizations, he established and directs Bricker & Eckler’s Counsel for Boards & Executives team that represents governing boards, their committees, and their executives. 1973

Frank A. Ray ’73 will receive the Bar Service Medal from the Columbus Bar Association in June for his long history of distinguished service to the organization. It is the highest honor accorded by the Columbus Bar Association, according to the group’s website. Ray, principal of Frank A. Ray Co., L.P.A., has practiced in Columbus for 40 years in civil litigation and appellate matters. (May, 2013)

Ray '73 recently was conferred with many distinctions, designations, and awards, including the following: a 2012 Professionalism Award from the Ohio chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates; Columbus Lawyer of the Year in the category of "Plaintiffs Personal Injury Law" for 2013 and named a "Tier One" law firm by U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers in America; and designations in the 2013 listings from Best Lawyers in America for Bet-the-Company-Litigation, Professional Liability Law Commercial Litigation, and Plaintiffs Personal Injury Litigation. Charles J. Faruki ’74 was named in the 2011 edition of Ohio Super Lawyers. Faruki, a trial lawyer with a focus on business litigation, was one of the founders of Faruki Ireland & Cox in Dayton, Ohio, in 1989 and a past president of the Dayton Bar Association.Faruki is also the new chair of the Supreme Court of Ohio’s Commission on Continuing Legal Education. He is the immediate past chair of the Ohio State Bar Association's Federal Courts and Practice Committee, and serves as chair of the governing council of its Antitrust Law Section. (January, 2011)

Douglas M. Mancino '74 joined the firm Hunton & Williams LLP as co-head of the firm’s health care practice in its newly expanded Los Angeles office. Mancino was previously with McDermott Will & Emery. He has served as counsel to health care clients in a number of cases that have defined the limits of tax-exempt organizations participating in health care joint ventures. A former president of the American Health Lawyers Association, Mancino is vice chair for publications of the ABA’s Tax Section, also serving as editor-in-chief of The Tax Lawyer. He has been profiled by California Law Business as among California’s most prominent practi­tioners in the tax exempt organizations and health care fields; recognized by The National Law Journal as one of the nation’s leading managed care lawyers, by the Los Angeles Business Journal as one of Southern California’s top 100 health care executives, and by Los Angeles Magazine as one of its Super Lawyers. LeRoy Pernell ’74 was featured in a January ABA Journal story entitled “Saving the School.” The story details the success of Pernell, the dean of the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) Law School, in achieving the once-challenged school full ABA accreditation. Pernell joined FAMU after spending 10 years as dean of the Northern Illinois University College of Law. (January, 2010)

Alec Wightman ’75 has been selected to receive The Ohio State University's 2012 John B. Gerlach Sr. Development Volunteer Award, which recognizes high-level involvement with development activities as a volunteer. Wightman is serving his second five-year term on Moritz’s National Council and is a member of The James Foundation Board. His membership on the College’s $30 million Investing in Momentum campaign helped create additional student scholarships, endowed faculty positions, and programmatic enhancements. His leadership helped to build the Barrister Club, a $2.2 million events facility funded completely by alumni support. Additionally, he joined a small, select group of donors to establish the College’s Entrepreneurial Business Law Clinic. (October, 2012)
