Tom Silberman ’07: Juggling Several Responsibilities in Afghanistan |
Since starting his new job in February, Tom Silberman ’07 still carries many of the same items to work as other attorneys, except one – a rifle.
“Not many lawyers carry a rifle to work and back on a daily basis,” Silberman said. “Some perhaps carry guns depending on their practice, their clients, or geographical locations, but not rifles and not openly. Here it’s required. While I am a lawyer, I am also a soldier.”
Silberman is an attorney with the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps for the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) at Forward Operating Base Salerno in Afghanistan. Silberman was assigned to the unit last summer, from its home station in Anchorage, Alaska. (Read More)

Pete Faerber ’06: Leading an Unpredictable JAG Life in Japan |
As a judge advocate and officer in charge of the Legal Service Support Section (LSSS) at an American Military base in Okinawa, Japan, Pete Faerber ’06 said the best description of his day-to-day routine is that it’s unpredictable.
“There isn't a normal day. It isn't uncommon to go from running a physical fitness test in the early morning straight into personnel meetings. Court proceedings and then legal training of some sort might finish off a typical day,” he said. “At any given time from 06:30 to 20:00 I'm as likely to be reviewing a court-martial for legal sufficiency as I am to be talking to a client about family or international law.”
Faerber has been at the base in Japan for more than two years as a Reservist in the Marine Corps. Originally from Delaware, Ohio, he is a long way from home on the tropical pacific island. (Read More)

3L Melissa Capossela spent 18 months working for a private criminal defense firm in Columbus. She enjoyed the work in the defense field, but learned that she would rather help defendants in a different way.
She’ll get that opportunity soon. Capossela was recently granted an Equal Justice Works fellowship, during which she will work to expand programs designed to help prisoners reenter into society.
“It’s a dream job,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to it.” (Read more)
