| Alan Michaels Named Dean of Moritz College of Law |
On Friday, Nov. 7, The Ohio State University Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Professor Alan C. Michaels as dean of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee and Provost Joseph Alutto recommended Michaels’ appointment. Dean Michaels, the Edwin M. Cooperman Professor of Law, was named interim dean in May after then dean Nancy Rogers was appointed as the Ohio attorney general.
“Alan is an outstanding scholar, a wonderful colleague, and totally committed to the College and the university,” Provost Alutto said. “He works effectively with the College's many constituencies and inspires and motivates all with whom he interacts. In the short time that he has served as interim dean, he has demonstrated all of these characteristics as he successfully led the College through the last stages of its strategic planning process.” (Read More) |
| James A. Marx ’97: Working Possibly the ‘Best Lawyering Job in the World’ |
The mood in the office building where James A. Marx ’97 works is directly correlated to 162 events in a calendar year. Then again, his office is the Great American Ball Park and home of the Cincinnati Reds. Nevertheless, whether the team wins or loses, Marx takes joy in the work he does and where he does it. “I brown-bagged it the other day, ate out on the ballpark and watched them cut the grass and line the field for a game, that’s not exactly something you can do in typical law office.”

| Election Hypothetical A Success |
|
In an initiative designed and led by Moritz Professor Edward B. Foley, a three-judge court recently issued a ruling in the hypothetical case of McCain v. Obama that upheld a (hypothetical) Colorado Supreme Court ruling that allowed the counting of some 60,000 provisional ballots filed on Election Day. In the hypothetical case and oral argument, sponsored by The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, AEI Brookings Election Reform Project, and Georgetown Law - Supreme Court Institute, a severe snow storm caused election officials in Denver to extend polling hours beyond 7 p.m. This spurred litigation challenging the 60,000 ballots, which were cast as provisional ballots, after the normal 7 p.m. deadline.

| Student Profile: From Buckeye Football to Moritz |
The difference between this year and last for 1L David Lisko goes beyond coming to law school and being recently married. This year, he is no longer on the football field at Ohio Stadium wearing his number 18 jersey during the game.
Lisko played wide receiver for the Buckeyes and said that this year it’s been tough transitioning to being a spectator. “What I miss most about football would be the competition, being a part of a team, and being with my friends from the team almost all day everyday,” he said. “I miss being down there with the guys during the game. It’s weird not knowing what is going on with the team when I watch them.”
