Message from Interim Dean Michaels
Dear Alumni and Friends:
By now you have probably heard that our dean, Nancy Rogers, has been appointed by the governor as Ohio Attorney General. This is a great honor for her, but an even greater boon to the state of Ohio. We at the College of Law are very proud of her. Dean Rogers will serve as the state’s top lawyer through November and will then return to Moritz as Professor Rogers to continue teaching in our alternative dispute resolution program.
The provost asked me to serve as interim dean and saying yes was easier than accepting an offer for Ohio State-Michigan football tickets. Under Dean Rogers’ leadership, an incredible feeling of momentum has been created at Moritz: we are attracting the most highly credentialed incoming classes in our history; we are recruiting top notch faculty, often competing with other leading schools; our alumni support is outstanding; and many new programs are being initiated. We are poised and ready to continue and expand these efforts, and I am excited and honored about my role in doing so.
I look forward to meeting many of you at our upcoming alumni events, tailgates, and reunions. I encourage you to stay in touch and stay involved. As I can surely attest to, you never quite know what surprises your career will bring you.
Best regards,
Alan C. Michaels
Interim Dean and Edwin M. Cooperman Professor of Law

Bob Rothman '72: Leading in an Emerging Legal Field

A few years ago, General Motors Corp. decided to create an internal electronic phone book that would, for instance, allow employees in Detroit to look-up colleagues in Rüsselsheim, Germany. While it is common, and often necessary, for companies within the United States to create similar databases for internal use, the transfer of this type of information from European Union countries is illegal. Bob Rothman ’72, GM’s chief privacy officer, explains the situation. (Read More)

3L Wins Award for Appellate Advocacy
While Assistant Dean Monte Smith watched Tiffany Romine and Chad Eggspuehler argue a case recently in the regional competition of the ABA’s National Appellate Advocacy Competition in Boston, he knew he was witnessing something special.
“About five minutes into Tiffany's first argument, I had this rush of adrenaline as I realized that I was watching a perfect moot court argument,” Assistant Dean Smith said. “I thought she was flawless and probably gave the two best moot court performances I have ever seen.” (Read More)

Student Feature: From Katrina to Columbus
Life was going as planned for Holly Walsh. She had just graduated from the College of William and Mary, moved to New Orleans, stocked her place with the tools necessary to make the three-year trek to a law degree, and had just finished her first tumultuous week at Tulane University School of Law. She was flying down the road she had long expected to follow, admitted Holly, who normally likes to establish a plan five years in advance. (Read more) |
